I love the hands on leaning that happens for kids and grown ups alike. We spent a day over fall break exploring, learning and crafting our way through Conner Prairie! We were bummed that it was too windy to go up in the balloon but the Treetop exhibit, the animals and a small crafting quiet room we found along the way were big hits! @connerprairie is just north of Indianapolis and offers an excellent living history musuem as well as special events throughout the year! If you haven’t been in a while, make plans to explore it soon! And save the date—they’re renovating their welcome center into a more interactive multimedia experience and it should open in early 2026! Visitors can explore 1836 Prairietown, meet costumed interpreters, and learn about daily life in the 1800s. Families can also enjoy the Treetop Outpost, a four-story outdoor play area surrounded by nature, and visit the Animal Encounters Barn. One of the most popular attractions is the 1859 Balloon Voyage, which offers a tethered balloon experience with panoramic views of Fishers and beyond. Thank you for having the hard conversations. The new Promised Land as Proving Ground exhibit and cabins should be a must for every visitor. About five years ago, Conner Prairie set out to revise the way it depicted Black history. For more than two decades, the interactive living history museum had offered "Follow the North Star," in which students participated in a re-enactment of people trying to escape slavery. While the program and others like it initially won national museum and history awards, many visitors and Black students said they found such experiences traumatic. The shift prompted Conner Prairie to develop an alternative. "It was very popular for a time, but certainly not with the community whose history it was intended to portray and certainly not everybody. And so that's just a non-starter right there.
