For most of the sport’s history, disc golf manufacturers have been focused on the wrong thing when discussing sponsorships. I knew this before I even got involved in the sport, I repeatedly had conversations with various brands explaining why they were making a mistake and it was often met with, “yeah well that’s how we do it.” Now, it’s biting them in the butt and at the same time, hurting the players, because they’ve been told to focus on the wrong things. The mistake, is ratings. Your rating is a decent metric to tell you how you’re progressing in skill, and can be used to generalize a player’s floors and ceiling. I think the rating system needs work and is largely holding the sport back, but that can be another post. Manufacturers have, for as long as they’ve been around, told players “you have to have XYZ rating in order to be sponsored or get anything from us.” Most manufacturers even have rating minimums for their team levels, where no matter what an exception can’t be made. This method of sponsorship has put the emphasis on your play over your value. There are players rated 1020+ that are worth less to a sponsor than a player rated below 900. The truth of the matter is that focusing on how you play vs how you grow the brand has forced players into protecting their rating, skipping local leagues, not playing events with bad ratings, etc… when in reality, those types of events are the top place a pro can influence their community, entice new players to start throwing, and grow their fan base to start selling more discs. The emphasis has been in the wrong place for a long time, and most manufacturers still don’t get it. I’ve been sponsored by companies that told me, “if you aren’t 1010 we won’t be able to offer you something more.” All the while knowing I have outsold and outperformed their top level players in sales and marketing. When I joined @gatewaydiscsports I had a candid conversation about this with Dave, and he said, “I don’t care one bit about your rating if you sell discs and you’re a good ambassador for the brand.” Once I heard that, I knew I was probably going to be with Gateway for a LONG time.
