SIDiabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening problem that affects people with diabetes. It occurs when the body starts breaking down fat at a rate that is much too fast. The liver processes the fat into a fuel called ketones, which causes the blood to become acidic.
If left untreated, DKA can lead to coma or death.

This isn’t just high blood sugar.
It’s likely diabetic ketoacidosis — and it can be fatal if you miss it.

RNThere is a lot that happens with diabetic ketoacidosis, but here is an easy & quick break down of what is happening in the body.
𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀
▪️Insufficient Insulin: Missed insulin doses/non compliance/inadequate insulin therapy.
▪️Infection: Infection is a very common precipitating factor that can contribute to DKA.
▪️Undiagnosed Diabetes: DKA may be the first sign of undiagnosed diabetes.
▪️Trauma or Surgery: Physical stress from trauma or surgery can increase the body’s demand for insulin.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆:
▪️Insulin Deficiency: DKA often begins with a shortage of insulin. Insulin is crucial for glucose uptake by cells.
▪️Increased Glucose Production: Without sufficient insulin, glucose uptake by cells is impaired. Consequently, the liver compensates by increasing glucose production through a process called gluconeogenesis. This elevates blood glucose levels.
▪️Breakdown of Fats: In the absence of insulin, cells cannot utilize glucose for energy. Instead, they shift to using fats for fuel. This leads to increased breakdown of fatty acids, resulting in the production of ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone).
▪️Ketone Body Accumulation: Ketone bodies, acidic in nature, accumulate in the blood. As their concentration rises, the blood becomes more acidic, a condition known as acidosis. The low pH impairs normal cellular function.
▪️Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalance: High blood sugar levels draw water from cells, causing dehydration. Additionally, increased urination leads to the loss of electrolytes such as Na, K, & Cl.
▪️Osmotic Diuresis: Hugh glucose levels exceed the kidney’s capacity to reabsorb glucose. Glucose spills into the urine, dragging water along with it, resulting in excessive urination and dehydration.
