Wrapped in vibrant West African style fabrics, the refugee astronaut is a striking symbol of the climate crisis, colonialism, and capitalism. Later in the tour, I found out that these are actually Dutch wax fabrics, which are reminiscent of traditional Nigerian textiles, further exemplifying the far-reaching effects of colonialism. The refugee adorns everyday items that we all use; a stool, medicine, telescope and camera - is the astronaut on a voyage himself, or is he running away from a colonial environment? You might catch a glimpse of Captain Cook’s Voyages book here which is about colonialism! The astronauts’ reflective helmet where you can see your own face reminds us: a climate refugee can be any one of us. Art prompts us to ask questions.
