This day is a powerful reminder that no matter how far someone has fallen, God’s mercy is always greater. The devotion comes from the revelations given to Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun in the 1930s, who recorded everything Jesus told her in her spiritual diary, known as the Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul (I recommend reading). In her journal, Jesus repeatedly emphasized His desire to pour out mercy upon the world, especially on this specific day, calling it a “feast of mercy” where “the very depths of My tender mercy are open.” He expressed deep sorrow that many souls do not trust in Him, even though His Heart is overflowing with love and forgiveness. One of the most important promises recorded in her diary is that anyone who goes to Confession, receives the Eucharist, and trusts in His mercy on Divine Mercy Sunday will receive complete forgiveness of sins and all punishment, like a total spiritual renewal. This message was later confirmed and spread by Pope John Paul II, who canonized Faustina and officially established the feast for the whole Church in the year 2000. KYFor years I’ve seen this image of Jesus Christ with red and blue rays pouring from His heart, and last year I finally decided to look into it more deeply.
It turns out it’s called Divine Mercy — a spiritual devotion that was shared with the world through the mystic visionary Saint Faustina Kowalska.
Between 1931 and 1938, this humble Polish nun experienced direct visitations from Christ, during which she came to understand something profoundly simple and radically freeing: that God’s true essence is mercy.
Again and again, the message was clear — the divine wants us to be released from the weight of our mistakes, especially when our desire is to do better.
Today I’m grateful to share the closing prayer of the Divine Mercy Chaplet with you — one that comes directly from the journal of Saint Faustina Kowalska.
