DRWe’re exposed to thousands of toxic substances on a daily basis.
It’s estimated that women are more affected by this than men – on average, we’re exposed to 7 times more toxins daily (and seven times more carcinogens) than our male counterparts, concealed in hair and beauty formulas, cleaning products and make-up. Biological differences inform our toxicity profiles, too – women have thinner skin, and toxins tend to be more easily stored in body fat, and women tend to carry about 10% more on average compared to men.

These are compounds that can interfere with the body’s hormone system.
Hormones control things like metabolism, reproduction, mood, and development, so disruption may affect the body’s balance.

SAWe can’t “detox” our way out of this: many everyday beauty & personal-care products still contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates & parabens. These are tied (by association, not proof of causation) to women’s health issues that are trending the wrong way.
• PCOS: Global cases nearly doubled from ~37M (1990) to 69M (2021). Age-standardised incidence rose ~14% over that period. 
• Migraines: 1 in 8 adults report migraines specifically when exposed to fragranced products (perfume, air fresheners, etc.). 
• Menopause timing: Multiple studies link higher PFAS (“forever chemicals”) levels with earlier natural menopause.
• Endometriosis: Systematic reviews find higher concentrations of several phthalate metabolites in women with endometriosis vs controls. 
• Morning sickness: Nausea/vomiting affects 50–80% of pregnancies and smell/odor sensitivity is a well-documented trigger—think strong fragrances. 
Why care? EDCs show up in cosmetics, skincare, and fragrances—and biomonitoring keeps finding them in people.

MOEDCs + their impact on fertility 🧴
Many of us know that plastics can have harmful effects on the environment… but using plastics is potentially linked to adverse effects on our fertility, too. The reason for this is what are called “endocrine-disrupting chemicals,” or EDCs, which can be found in a number of household products and everyday items.
EDCs trick your body into thinking there are more hormones being produced than there really are. In turn, your body may respond by either shutting down its own production of hormones, or by ramping hormone production up. While it’s impossible to avoid EDCs completely, most EDC experts agree that *limiting* exposure can have a positive effect on reproductive and overall health.

Let’s zoom out. 🧾
Thermal receipts often contain BPS, a chemical in the same family as BPA. These are endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs), which means in high or repeated doses, they may interfere with hormones that regulate things like growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
📋 A new study by the Center for Environmental Health found BPS transfers to the skin after brief contact.
But here’s the nuance:
🔹 There’s currently no agreed-upon “safe” level of BPS exposure—so any detection triggers a warning under California’s regulations.
🔹 That doesn’t mean brief contact = danger. It means the science is still catching up.
So should you panic if your toddler touches a receipt? No.
Should you let them chew on it daily? Also no.
This isn’t about fear—it’s about recognizing patterns, reducing repeat exposures, and choosing what actually moves the needle for your family’s health.
