FITo prepare for the film, Denzel and the cast performed Fences 114 times on Broadway. Denzel actually refused to "soften" Troy Maxson for the camera, insisting that the audience needed to feel the genuine weight of a father who provides everything but warmth.
During this specific "Duty" speech, Denzel used a technique called "The Wall." He purposely stood closer to actor Jovan Adepo than what was comfortable, using his physical size to literally box the boy into the porch.
