OHOne of the biggest questions I get is “how do you get clients?” Let’s talk about it.
Getting someone’s attention as a freelancer is hard enough as it is, so getting someone to actually invest in your services can sometimes seem impossible, especially when you’re first starting out.
1) Position Yourself as an Expert
For one, don’t just say you’re a graphic designer. Anyone can be a “graphic designer.” Instead, position yourself as an expert in whatever niche of design you primarily work in. I do this by not only sharing quality work, but also by showing that I know what I’m talking about across all my platforms with educational content, case studies, and providing context.
2) Have a Quality Portfolio
Having a strong portfolio/website helps a TON as well. It adds a professional touch to your business and lets people know you’re not here to just play around. Here, you can showcase your work, case studies, & success stories. Always make sure what you do is clear and that you’re showing quality work you’re proud of. Remember, QUALITY over QUANTITY is always best. I’ve said it before, but the work you share here doesn’t even have to come from real clients—you can share passion projects. Just make sure it’s quality!
3) Solve Problems
Low value clients want to know that you can design anything for them. High-value clients want to know you can solve problems. Customers willing to invest are more interested in the business solutions you can help them with. So, figure out how to bridge the gap between what your clients may be struggling with (not connecting with target audience, branding inconsistency, etc.), and figure out what services you can provide to help them. Then, market your SOLUTIONS rather than just your service/product.

OHAre my prices too high, or do I finally understand my worth as a graphic designer? I went from being someone who used to charge $30 for logos to now closing 4 + 5 figure deals on a single project. And that all started from, say it with me now, REALIZING 👏🏾 MY 👏🏾 WORTH!
I’ve always struggled with pricing myself, especially since pricing can be very subjective and people tend to not always be very publicly transparent with their rates. I used to have so much imposter syndrome when it came to this. “My work isn’t worth that much.” “Who’s really going to pay ME?” But that kind of thinking only led to LACK! The worse someone can tell you is “your prices are too high.” But I promise you, there will always be someone who’s willing to pay your price. And at the end of the day, when you raise your prices, you are ultimately doing less work for more money. Why make 4 graphics for $50 each, when you can make 1 graphic for $200? The cheaper your prices, the easier you’ll burn out. I learned that the hard way.
Never, and I mean never, have I completely stopped getting clients after raising my prices. Don’t believe the lie that “no one will want to book you.” That’s just something used to tell myself out of fear. There’s always someone willing to invest! You just have to alter your mind to attract those higher paying clients, do the work to where you feel confident in your prices (practice, practice, practice!), and market yourself to where your prices make sense. Get in the habit of speaking and pricing yourself with confidence, so you can instill the same confidence and trust in your clients.
