Beautiful day to visit our local stream to see the spring changes. The leaves are not out but early spring blooms are! We saw rue anemone which blooms before the tree canopy completely shades it. Spotted salamander spotting! Last night’s Amphibians of Spring Naturalist Walk was a success! The rainy conditions and warmer temperatures were just right for this event, and participants got to observe a spotted salamander, a frog, and even some marbled salamander larvae at one of the Preserve’s vernal pools! Check out “The Hidden Life of Vernal Pools” from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (linked in our bio) to learn what vernal pools are and about the wildlife that call them home!

Hi students! 🌿 Happy Spring Break from Community Earth Club. Spring Break runs March 9 to March 15, and our meetings will resume Wednesday, March 18. While you’re out exploring, resting, or traveling, we’d love to see what you discover. If you come across any interesting flora, fauna, ecosystems, or environmental observations, share them in our Discord (link in bio). It’s also a great space to talk about your travels, field sightings, or just connect with other students who enjoy the natural world as much as you do. Whether you’re hiking, visiting the coast, observing wildlife, or simply noticing the ecology around you, remember that even small observations can spark scientific curiosity. Stay tuned as well…we have a big announcement coming soon, and we’re excited to share it with you all. Thank you to all of our members for being part of this growing community of environmentally curious students. We hope you have a restful and inspiring break. “Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder.” — E. B. White 🌎✨

As winter fades into spring, it’s a good time to reflect on the quiet ways our gardens support wildlife 🐸🐞🌾 Leaving grasses and certain plants standing through the colder months creates vital shelter for insects, amphibians, and other small animals when they need it most. Follow along with Curator of Estuarine Biology Matt to learn how a little “mess” in your garden can make a big difference for local ecosystems. 🎥Intern Maddy #CalvertMarineMuseum #SpringSeason #WinterWildlife #GardenHabitat #SupportLocalWildlife #PollinatorFriendly #EstuaryLife #MarylandNature #WildlifeConservation #SustainableGardening #HabitatMatters #NatureEducation

Wildlife Wednesday: During the first warm rain of the year, the ground thaws and wakes up many of Ohio’s amphibians that have been hibernating all winter. On these wet nights, many species of mole salamander (genus Ambystoma) migrate to vernal pools to breed and lay their eggs. Conserving forested wetlands protects crucial habitat for critters like these. If you ever get a chance to observe a salamander migration, make sure to watch your step and ensure your hands and boots are clean to keep these amazing animals safe.
