Safer Internet Day is a global awareness initiative that encourages children, young people and adults to reflect on how we use the online world and digital technology. It provides a valuable annual opportunity to refresh conversations around online safety, wellbeing and responsible digital behaviour. The theme for 2026 was Smart tech, safe choices – exploring the safe and responsible use of AI. This focus recognises how rapidly artificial intelligence and smart technologies are becoming embedded in young people’s everyday online experiences. The emphasis is on building confidence, critical thinking and sound judgement when using digital tools, rather than promoting fear or restriction. Across Cumbria Education Trust schools, Safer Internet Day provided an opportunity to: • Reinforce key online safety messages in engaging and age-appropriate ways • Encourage open discussions about AI, digital decision-making and emerging technologies • Remind staff and families that online safety is an ongoing safeguarding priority, not a one-off lesson At Cumbria Education Trust, our commitment to online safety is rooted in our core values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE. We want every pupil to treat others with respect in digital spaces, take responsibility for their online choices, and develop the resilience needed to navigate an increasingly complex technological world with confidence. Safer Internet Day serves as a powerful reminder that preparing young people for life in a digital society is not just about protecting them from risk, but about empowering them to think critically, act wisely and use technology positively. #CumbriaEducationTrust #BeTheBestYouCanBe #SaferInternetDay

In case you missed it… the Amplifying Child Safety Online project is now up and running! We’ve teamed up with the NSPCC to help young people from across Scotland gather their views on technology and create resources that keep them safe online. These resources cover a whole range of topics, including AI and learning, misinformation, online bullying, and so much more! The launch of the project came at the perfect time as we celebrate CyberScotland Week. To check out the resources, click the link in our bio.

This Week in Child Digital Safety Your roundup of the key stories shaping how children interact with technology — and what parents can do to stay ahead. — UK launches national consultation on children’s online lives The UK government is examining how tech affects children, including AI chatbots, social media habits, and addictive design. This could lead to stronger protections and new rules for platforms. For parents: Governments are rethinking how children should interact with digital spaces. — Social media linked to violent ‘school wars’ posts London police warn of TikTok and Snapchat posts encouraging organised fights between schools. Authorities are working with platforms to remove harmful content. For parents: Discuss online “trends” that may look like jokes but could lead to real‑world harm. — Roblox faces lawsuit over child safety failures A US lawsuit claims Roblox failed to protect children from grooming and harmful content. Roblox says safety remains a top priority. For parents: Remember — games are social platforms. Check chat settings and who your child interacts with. — Ofcom fines adult site for missing age checks Ofcom has issued a £1.35m fine for failing to implement age verification — signalling tougher enforcement under the Online Safety Act. For parents: Age‑verification rules are becoming real and enforceable. — Global trend: Child online safety regulation ramps up Countries worldwide are increasing requirements around age checks, platform accountability, and child protection. For parents: Digital safety is shifting from optional to enforceable. — 🧭 What parents can do this week • Ask your child what apps they’re using • Check one privacy or safety setting • Keep conversations open Follow Guardian Compass for weekly updates on keeping children safe online. #ChildSafetyOnline #DigitalParenting #OnlineSafety #TechNews #SocialMediaSafety #GuardianCompass #ParentTips #FamilySafety #InternetSafety

Safer Internet Week 🌐💻 From March 2 to 6, our school marked Safer Internet Week, with students from E2 to P5 taking part in sessions designed to raise awareness about responsible and safe internet use. Throughout the week, students explored both the opportunities and risks of the digital world through educational videos, interactive quizzes, discussions, and creative activities. These sessions helped them better understand how to use the internet safely, how to protect themselves online, and the importance of speaking to a trusted adult if something online ever makes them feel worried or uncomfortable. Students also learned the SMART rules for staying safe online: S – Safe: Keep personal information private. M – Meet: Never meet someone you only know online without a trusted adult. A – Accept: Do not accept messages, files, or links from people you don’t know, or anything that feels wrong. R – Reliable: Remember that not everything online is true. T – Tell: Tell a trusted adult whenever something feels wrong. To conclude the week, our Digital Leaders led an engaging and interactive primary student assembly on Friday, sharing key messages and helping reinforce what students had learned. It was a great way to end the week and remind everyone how we can all play a part in staying safe online. #HautLac #SaferInternetWeek #DigitalSafety

Smart Tech, Safe Choices! Our students actively participated in this year’s Safer Internet Day, exploring the safe, responsible, and ethical use of AI and digital technology. Through assemblies, classroom discussions, drama presentations, practical sessions, and an engaging AI Awareness song created by our ICT Teacher, students across key stages developed greater awareness of online safety, digital responsibility, and informed decision-making. The AI Awareness song added energy and excitement to the programme, allowing students to vibe, connect with the message, and learn about digital safety in a fun and memorable way. Together, we continue to build a culture of smart technology use and safe digital citizenship. #SaferInternetDay #holdenparkschool #SmartTechSafeChoices #fypppp #DigitalResponsibility #AISafety #AI

Is the "Great Australian Experiment" working?📱 Almost three months ago, Australia became the trailblazer, implementing landmark social media age restrictions, and moving global thinking from "parental oversight" to "systemic protection." @hugoribatika from the SFC- SA team had the great pleasure in chatting to Dany Elachi, co-founder of @theheadsupalliance, for a heart-to-heart conversation on what’s actually happening on the frontlines. Key takeaways from the discussion: 👉 It’s not just a "ban": It’s about shifting the burden of safety from exhausted parents to billion-dollar platforms. 👉 The VPN Myth: While tech workarounds exist, the "friction" created by the law is already changing teenage behaviour and household norms. 👉 The Global Roadmap: From the UK to the US, world leaders are looking at the Australian model as the definitive blueprint for child online safety. The question is "How will we respond as South Africans?" 🙌As Dany says, "We aren't just protecting kids from a screen - we're protecting their right to a childhood." 👩🏽‍💻Watch the full conversation on our YouTube channel, link in bio #OnlineSafety #DigitalWellbeing #HeadsUpAlliance #SocialMediaLaw #ParentingInTheDigitalAge

“Does anyone else think that the internet is a little broken? You’re not alone. UNICEF is calling for substantial changes in how children are protected online. Instead of age restrictions and outright bans, UNICEF suggests safety be a shared responsibility. Internet safety is more than a bandaid on a broken leg. Government regulations to compel platforms to prioritize safety over profits is a great place to start. Also, redesigning platforms to prioritize child safety, privacy and wellbeing can redefine how kids interact with social media for the better. What else is missing? Easily accessible ways for kids to seek help and report harmful content as well as support for parents so they can help their children build healthy digital skills. Safe digital spaces are important for kids to succeed, especially if they face challenging obstacles in the real world. Learning to navigate the internet is a legitimate social skill in our world where everything Do your kids spend any time online? Once you upload something online, it is no longer yours. Educating your children on the dangers of the online world is the best way to prevent a negative interaction happening to them. The challenges have further compounded thanks to the proliferation of AI. Even an innocent picture of your child has the ability to be turned into illegal content by bad actors with the use of an AI. Now more than ever we need to be thinking twice about what we post and what we allow our children to be posting online. #Securiix #DontGetLeftBehind #AI #OnlineSafety #TorontoIt
