Makkah is the holiest city in Islam. It is the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final messenger of Islam, and the city where the Qur’an began to be revealed. Muslims all over the world face Makkah during their daily prayers, a direction known as the Qiblah. At the heart of Makkah lies Al-Masjid Al-Haram, the Grand Mosque, which contains the Ka‘bah. The Ka‘bah is a cube-shaped structure believed to have been originally built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام and his son Isma‘il عليه السلام as a house of worship dedicated solely to Allah. Circumambulating the Ka‘bah (ṭawāf) is a central act of worship in Islam. Hajj and Umrah Makkah is the destination of Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Every Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime. Each year, millions of Muslims from all races, nationalities, and languages gather in Makkah, wearing simple white garments, symbolizing equality, humility, and unity before Allah. In addition to Hajj, Muslims may perform Umrah, a lesser pilgrimage that can be done at any time of the year. Both Hajj and Umrah revolve around acts of worship connected to the Ka‘bah and nearby sacred sites. Historical Significance Long before Islam, Makkah was already an important city. It was a center of trade due to its location on caravan routes and held religious importance among the Arab tribes, though many practiced idol worship at the time. Islam purified the Ka‘bah from idols and restored pure monotheism. ⚠️ A Sign Mentioned in Hadith The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When you see a red column of fire in the East during the month of Ramadan, then store food for one year.” (Arabic: إذا رأيتم عموداً أحمر من قبل المشرق في شهر رمضان فادخروا طعام سنتكم) Al-Tabarani, Al-Muʿjam al-Awsat, Hadith no. 371; Al-Suyuti, Al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, Hadith no. 640; Al-Munawi, Fayd al-Qadir, Vol. 1, p. 362; Nuʿaym ibn Hammad, Kitab al-Fitan, Hadith no. 645. Recently, massive fires and thick smoke were seen rising into the sky after Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted Iranian oil depots and fuel facilities near Tehran, creating huge columns of flames visible from far across the city. Many people are reflecting on this hadith when seeing such scenes during the month of Ramadan. However, only Allah knows the true meaning and timing of the signs mentioned in Hadith. We should respond with faith, reflection, and prayer. 🤲 May Allah protect the Ummah, grant peace to the world, and keep us steadfast on the path of truth.
