𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲. “The ocean got my attention, but it is life in the ocean that has held my attention for all these years.” - @dr.sylviaearle A pioneer in ocean exploration and conservation, Dr. Earle has witnessed the most extraordinary period in human history - a time when we finally understand the ocean as never before. Yet knowledge has come at a cost. As we have learned more, we have also lost more - because of us, one species with exceptional capacity to change the nature of Nature. But we are also the solution. Dr. Earle reminds us that protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 is not the finish line, but a vital milestone towards restoring balance to our blue planet. “𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. “You should treat the ocean as if your life depends on it, because it does.” Legendary marine biologist, Sylvia Earle, sat down with us in 2019 to share her work and passion for the ocean and the planet. Sylvia has spent more than four decades at the forefront of ocean exploration - and even holds the world record for the deepest untethered sea walk by a woman. This is her Brief But Spectacular take on why the ocean should matter to all of us.

OCEAN KEEP POPPING UP? On your timeline. Probably becuase you love it. It has you in its spell. But I ask you this. Do you understand our oceans? Do you want to feel connected to our oceans on a deeper level. To love and respect all that it does, and understand truly how remarkable our oceans are. If so, I can give you access to ocean mastery for free right now. Just comment “OCEAN”, let me know I am not the only one mesmerised by our big blue. If you haven’t already. Go watch mission blue by Sylvia Earle. It is remarkable! #Ocean

For 90 years, Sylvia Earle has pioneered what it means to be an advocate for the ocean. On International Women’s Day, we honour women whose knowledge, courage, and dedication continue to shape the future of our seas. A reminder that hope matters most when it leads to action. Each of us can be part of protecting what sustains us. Inspired by @dr.sylviaearle Powered by you 🌊 #InternationalWomensDay #OceanConservation #MissionBlue

Founded in Panama in 1910, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) is advancing world-class research to better understand tropical ecosystems and the life they support. With support from the Islas Secas Foundation, STRI is studying marine species in the Pacific, including tracking blue whales to inform smart #conservation strategies, and helping safeguard Coiba National Park through buoy systems that reduce reef damage. 🪸 Thank you to STRI for leading these efforts!

I’ve always loved the ocean, but it used to feel so distant, like it was only for vacations. My journey with SSI, from citizen science to Divemaster, changed that. I went from curious to capable, from tourist to steward, from recreation to conservation. 🌊💙 The people I’ve met along the way: ocean leaders, scientists, instructors, and fellow water lovers, have inspired me endlessly. Everyone has a different path: research, marine biology, science communication, personal growth, or just pure passion. As long as you’re safe and responsible, the ocean has a place for you too. What’s your story? 🌊 #wearessi @blueoceansprogram

🪸How many more coral colonies have yet to be discovered? Have you heard about the fairy-tale discovery made by the mother-daughter scuba duo in Australia? The pair was supporting The Great Reef Census when they experienced something they couldn’t have ever imagined. Inside this hopeful story for the future of our blue planet is the power of citizen science. 💪 Feast your eyes on their amazing discovery in the video, 🔗in bio. Yes–your actions make an impact! PADI AWARE is launching our Global Shark & Ray Census this year. Maybe you’ll make a shark discovery of your own! #padiaware #CoralReef #oceanconservation #savesharks #jackfish44

🐬🌴 emphasizes that the Offshore Osa Marine Hot Spot in Costa RIca should be understood primarily as a marine bioproductivity hotspot rather than purely a biodiversity hotspot—an important distinction rooted in both ecological and public perception aspects. Bioproductivity versus Biodiversity: While many places in the tropical oceans indeed harbor far greater marine biodiversity (that is, the sheer number and variety of marine species), the biological productivity around Osa—the rate at which biomass is generated via oceanic processes—is exceptionally high. This bioproductivity supports large aggregations of pelagic species such as lanternfish, dolphins, tuna, and other marine megafauna that depend on abundant food sources. High Productivity Driven by Oceanographic Factors: The Offshore Osa Marine Hot Spot experiences persistent lanternfish upwellings and currents bringing nutrient-rich forest products that fuel this productivity. This creates an environment where energy flows rapidly through the food web, generating plentiful biomass even if species diversity (number of species) is not very high for tropical oceans. Essentially, the system is highly efficient at producing large amounts of fish and higher predators. Perceptual Confusion due to Terrestrial Biodiversity: Another key point is that the Osa Peninsula's rainforest biodiversity is world renowned and extraordinarily rich, representing approximately 2.5% of the world's terrestrial species on just 1,200 km2. This intense terrestrial biodiversity has often led people—especially conservationists and tourists—to assume that the adjacent marine environment is equally diverse on a global scale. Clarifying the Marine Reality: However, the marine area does not rank as one of the top marine biodiversity hotspots globally despite having high cetacean species richness relative to Costa Rica. Instead, its claim to global ecological significance lies more in the extraordinarily high primary and secondary productivity that supports large biomass
