In 1990, there was no movement yet — just overlapping friendships, shared houses, and unfinished bands. Chris Cornell started writing songs as a way to survive the loss, not launch anything. Temple of the Dog was grief made audible, nothing more ambitious than that.
From there, everything leaks outward. Former Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were rebuilding from nothing. Mike McCready was pulled in. Matt Cameron anchored it. Then a singer from San Diego — in town to audition for a different band — filled in a low harmony Cornell was struggling with. Eddie Vedder didn’t arrive with a vision. He arrived at the right moment. Four months later, Pearl Jam released Ten, and the industry rushed in after the fact.

This band was never supposed to exist. It came together because Andrew Wood was gone, and the people closest to him had nowhere to put it. In 1990 there was no grunge movement, no scene, no master plan. Just a handful of people who knew each other, lived near each other, and were all sitting with the same loss. Chris Cornell picked up a pen. Not to start something. Just to get through it. Temple of the Dog was what came out.
Everything else followed without anyone intending it. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had watched their band evaporate overnight when Wood died. Mike McCready was brought into the circle. Matt Cameron sat behind the kit. Then a kid from San Diego passed through town on his way to try out for something else entirely, sang a low part that Cornell couldn’t quite land, and never went back home. Eddie Vedder wasn’t looking for a moment. The moment found him. Within four months Pearl Jam had Ten recorded and the industry spent the next decade pretending it had seen it coming.
Temple of the Dog put out one record, never played a single show behind it, and dissolved before anyone was paying attention.

At just 24 years old, the Mother Love Bone frontman was the charismatic sun around which the Seattle scene orbited. His death didn’t just end a promising career; it acted as the grim catalyst for the formation of Temple of the Dog and, ultimately, Pearl Jam.
When Chris Cornell began writing “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and “Reach Down,” it wasn’t a commercial play, it was a processing of grief. This personal tribute expanded into a supergroup featuring former Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, alongside Mike McCready and Matt Cameron. The technical turning point occurred when a relatively unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder flew in to audition, eventually providing the haunting low harmonies on “Hunger Strike.” Temple of the Dog’s self-titled album was recorded in just 15 days (November–December 1990) at London Bridge Studios on a modest budget of roughly $20,000. Only four months after these sessions, Pearl Jam began tracking Ten. By the time MTV put “Hunger Strike” into heavy rotation in 1992, Ten was already on its way to becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time, eventually reaching 13x Platinum (Diamond) status in the US. While the Temple of the Dog album initially sold poorly, its 1992 re-release saw it peak at no. 5 on the Billboard 200, proving that the world was finally ready for the “Seattle Sound” that Wood had pioneered.
