DRWhat is the ICCPR and why am I in Switzerland talking about it?! 📲 watch and see!
Here’s the steps on how we got to today:
1️⃣As citizens we submitted reports to help the UN Human Rights Committee see how the US is falling short from the treaty we signed in the 1990s to protect human rights. My group @obs4rj collected 70 submissions of abortion seekers and providers harmed after Roe fell that went into our report about abortion access and how to the US is failing its citizens.
2️⃣In addition to these reports we spent the past few days testifying and sharing stories with them so they could see the real impact.
3️⃣They take our reports and testimony and use it to formulate questions to the US representatives here and over 2 days of questioning get their answers.
4️⃣The Human Rights Committee will then issue a report of their concerns and recommendations they have. This will come in a few weeks. ie, they tell the US delegation what they need to do to get in line with the treaty.
5️⃣Our organizations can use this for further advocacy and putting pressure on legislators to move forward - because the world is watching us.
