SHIglu (Igloo): Snow House
In Western society, people are often judged based on their “formal” education. Diplomas, degrees and the schools they attended.
However, Indigenous knowledge (reading weather patterns, building igluit, understanding the land, tides, stars, snow, animals, all while respecting the environment) is comparable to a doctorate when translated into Western terms. If you think about it… in these harsh conditions, even a small mistake can cost you your life.
How our ancestors were able to survive for all those years by living in an igloo. It’s something most people don’t fully understand. Many believe this way of life belongs in the distant past but forget that our parents/grandparents were born and raised in an Iglu. My grandparents were the last generation to live this lifestyle. Traditions that are still here👏🏼

PADamp is one of the biggest challenges in a building like this.
When the Palazzo was originally built it was directly on the earth .. straight on to soil and rock .. no real foundations, no damp proof course .. no mitigation of any kind.
These utilitarian or ‘working’ rooms throughout the ground floor were originally used for stabling animals and housing carriages and for the purposes of commercial trade and the storage of goods, as well as guards rooms, so damp walls and floors (and the associated smells) were just accepted as a characteristic of all of these buildings and this would have been absolutely no concern to the noble family who occupied the floors above.
Today as the slightly ‘less noble owners’ we not only wish to preserve the truly spectacular architecture of these spaces (so minimising any future damp is vital) but we also wish to fully incorporate their unique atmosphere into the Palazzo as a whole; they are part of the narrative .. with every floor in the building having its own part of the complete story to tell.
In order to do this our structural engineers have created a ventilated flooring system which we have fitted throughout .. a vespaio .. using igloo pre-formers which will help to create a continuous air space beneath the concrete slab. Then in connecting all of the vespiao floors together this would then allow air to move freely underneath helping to prevent the build up of any moisture.
Obviously, damp isn’t the part people get excited about .. but unless you decide to abandon the entire ground floor space (or accept the fact that you have 3250 sq ft of non-dry storage) these spaces all need care and attention .. and that’s how we begin to bring this beautiful part of our ‘grand old lady’ back to life .. literally from the bottom up!!
