This #MicroscopeMonday comes from @tardibabe on our BX53 system! 🔬 This awesome video features a Stephanoceros fimbriatus rotifer! "Rotifers are also referred to as « Wheel Animals » because of the rotating cilia, called corona, they have on their heads! They usually use these cilia to create a water current that attracts food particles like bacteria, algae, ciliates and other microorganisms to the mouth. Although this species is a bit different from the other rotifers. Instead of having some rotating wheels on their heads, they have five long tentacles with moving cilia that redirect preys toward the mouth! These rotifers are basically ambush predators waiting for preys to pass by. Preys then get trapped into small compartments before getting pumped by sphincter muscles and ultimately being swallowed. Most rotifers are planktonic and swim around but Stephanoceros fimbriatus is sessile, their adult stage is immobile. When in their larval stage, they swim around until they find a nice spot to stay for the rest of their lives. I found this one sticked to an hydra, which is kind of odd since the hydra could easily have eaten the rotifer." Looking to get into the fascinating world of microscopy? HiP-CT is an X-ray technique that allows scientists to see incredible detail in soft tissue without needing to dissect it. High-resolution 3D imaging like this can help researchers uncover more information about the structures of organs, right down to the cellular level. This will help them see what goes wrong when organs are diseased, so they can develop new treatments. This work is part of the Human Organ Atlas, an open science image database of all human organs to understand the structure of functioning organs and the changes underlying disease. #biology #imaging #science #AdvancedImaging #SciComm

What if chromosomes were like chutes and ladders? 🧬 “I’m using onion root tips because meristematic cells in this region are actively dividing, driving root growth. This makes it possible to observe cells in various stages of the cell division process. . If you look closely, you’ll see many cells in interphase, as well as cells in prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and some that have recently completed cytokinesis. . Let me know in the comments how many stages of cell division you’re able to spot!” 📸: @dr.bio4ever 🔬: Olympus CX31 . . . #MicroWorld #Microscopy #Optics #Imaging #Objective #LifeScience #Biology #Research #Science #Scientists #LabLife #Laboratory #ImagingTechnology #FluorescenceMicroscopy #ConfocalMicroscopy #Microbiology #SciArt

You’re looking at a new way to see entire organs at nanoscale resolution without a single cut to precious organ samples. Led in part by Gokul Upadhyayula, the VIPS method uses light instead of physical blades to remove tissue, layer by layer, while keeping every structure intact for stunning 3D reconstructions. With this level of clarity, researchers can watch how disease rewires cells and their connections, insights that can ultimately point us toward better prevention, treatments, and cures. #imaging #science #biology #microscopy

Give this paramecium some privacy, will ya! 👀🫣 "When it comes to eating, Paramecium uses a specialized structure called the oral groove. This structure is lined with tiny hair-like cilia, which are used to create a current of water that brings small particles of food towards Paramecium. Once the food particles are attracted to the oral groove, they are pushed to the gullet, a tubular structure that runs through the cell body. . The gullet acts like a conveyor belt, moving the food particles to a small vesicle called the food vacuole. Inside the food vacuole, digestive enzymes break down the food particles into smaller molecules that are absorbed through the cell membrane and used for energy. In the video, you can see how the food vacuole gets filled with tiny microorganisms. . Despite being a single-cell microorganism, Paramecium displays complex behavior, such as its ability to sense and respond to changes in its environment. For example, Paramecium can move towards or away from light and can detect and avoid harmful chemicals. In this video it appears as if Paramecium is ambushing a swarm of microorganisms so that it can disperse them to eat them! . Once the Paramecium has absorbed all the nutrients in the food vacuoles, it expels (poops) the waste products through the anal pore, located at the posterior end of the organism.” 📸: @dr.bio4ever 🔬: Olympus CX31 . . . #MicroWorld #Microscopy #Optics #Imaging #Objective #LifeScience #Biology #Research #Science #Scientists #LabLife #Laboratory #ImagingTechnology #FluorescenceMicroscopy #ConfocalMicroscopy #Microbiology #SciArt

Hush! Take a step into one of the best laboratories in the world for minimizing mechanical vibrations and electromagnetic fields. The lab is a controlled environment deep underground, in which our researchers make 3D nanoscale measurements using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study the small things, such as the fine features of semiconductor chips or nanoparticles. The SEM is housed inside a cleanroom space, which allows us to avoid contamination of our samples by the environment. The instrument itself sits on a five-ton concrete slab, floating on air, isolated from the floor in the rest of the building to stabilize itself and minimize vibrations. Foam on the walls also mitigates sound from neighboring laboratories. But why does everything need to be so silent and still? The laser-based measurements are so sensitive that they can be affected by a person talking across the room (and you could actually pinpoint what was said and where in the room that person was). This laboratory is special because we are pushing SEM technology to its physical limits to improve image and measurement quality as much as possible—less noise, less grain, less blur, and more atomic-scale data. #Cleanroom #ScanningElectronMicroscope #Imaging #Nanoscience

Cool subcellular snapshots 📸 SLAC scientists have developed a better method for preparing thin cell slices. This paves the way for imaging tiny structures inside cells via cryo-electron tomography (which involves shooting electrons through thin slices of frozen samples) that were previously off limits. The team used a tri-coincident system, which aligns the focal planes of three instruments: a scanning electron microscope, an ion beam, and an optical microscope. To test out the approach, they imaged this 26-nanometer-wide virus infecting a human cell. #SLACLab #Cryo #Cell #Imaging #Electrons Song: Discovery Artist: Ak Musicbed: MB01NWT4B4PLYH5

Macrophage freakin me out 🥵🔥 These fire-like macrophages are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the immune system. They “ruffle” continuously to sample their environment—adapting and shifting, ready to engulf and eliminate invaders. The name “macrophage” literally means “big eater” in Greek, reflecting their primary job: to eat and digest pathogens. New microscopes will help us image these cells as they develop in bone marrow. Check out their fire-like ballet! #microscopy #nanoparticles #imaging #macrophage #biology #cellbiology #science
