HEIf I had to redo intern year of residency, here’s what I would do differently👇
⭐️Found an efficient way to look up relevant medical information for my off service rotations. For IM, I liked UptoDate (obviously), MGH’s Housestaff Manual (google it and it will pop up) and for EM I liked WikiEM
⭐️Make a notes app on my phone with all the phone numbers and contact information of people in the hospital like consulting a certain team, social work, pharmacy, translator services, etc
⭐️You’re going to have to get used to multitasking and being interrupted and you need a good system for it. For example, you might be seeing a patient and in the middle you’ll get called by a nurse for a patient, get called by a social worker about a discharge thing, etc and have to constantly learn how to prioritize. I liked having a separate paper that was my to do list for the day and would writ every call request down and cross them off as I completed it
⭐️Emotionally, not put so much pressure on myself to be perfect! Residency is a pressure cooker and you have to take care of yourself! Whether it’s through exercise, cooking healthy meals, or therapy, please make sure you’re filling your cup
Oh… and I’d get blackout curtains much sooner!!
