CRInteresting fact: When Led Zeppelin reunited for the Celebration Day concert at the O2 Arena, “Kashmir” was the song the world was waiting for.
This track is that despite its name, it has nothing to do with the region in South Asia. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics while driving through the desolate Sahara Desert in Morocco. He was struck by the idea of a “traveler in time and space,” and Jimmy Page matched that energy with a “staircase” guitar riff that uses a unique DADGAD tuning.
This creates that haunting, Eastern-influenced drone that makes the song feel like a ritual. On this night, with the “Son of a God”, Jason Bonham filling his late father John’s seat on the drums, the band achieved a level of sonic power that hadn’t been felt since 1980.
