As far as LTAD goes, it’s pretty fluid in its applicability. But if we’re aware that there are stages that guide our programming and coaching decisions, the efficacy of our knowledge transfer will go a long way. Speed doesn’t start with A-skips or ladders For youth athletes, I believe the best place to start is by actually letting them run, in many different ways My main goal when doing this with my guys is to expose them to varied forms of accelerating, in multiple directions, from multiple positions and starts I see running fast in different shapes and forms as great GENERAL training for them. And as always, it’s about doing it in a fun & engaging way, just like the rest of the training we do. My priority is on their long-term development, it’s not about trying to have faster 13-year-olds. In terms of the long-term development of speed, exposing them to this variety now, gives them a great foundation to build upon as they age • • • • #longtermathletedevelopment #ltad #youthathletes #youthsportstraining

Most people see a 12-year-old with a safety squat bar and chains and think “too soon.” We see a foundation being built. When done with proper form and progression, heavy lifting, sprinting, and jumping aren’t just safe—they’re the secret sauce for long-term athletic development. Building monsters, one rep at a time. 😤

Neuromuscular coordination sprint drills are one of the highest-value investments you can make for 9–12 year olds—this is a golden window where the brain and body are extremely adaptable. What is Neuromuscular Coordination? It’s how well the brain (nervous system) and muscles (body) communicate to produce smooth, fast, and efficient movement. For young athletes, this isn’t about strength yet—it’s about learning how to move correctly and quickly. At ages 9–12: • The nervous system develops faster than muscle mass • Coordination > strength for performance gains Benefits: • Teaches proper sprint mechanics (arm action, knee drive, foot strike) • Improves rhythm and timing • Creates efficient movement patterns early 👉 This is where future elite sprinters are built—not in the weight room. #neuromuscularcoordination #neuromuscularreeducation #youthdevelopment #ltad #movementtherapy

Youngsters can bowl everyday That comment will get a few going I think, but let me clarify why I think bowlers before the age of 13 years can bowl short periods everyday. The age where volume and intensity management is key is circa pubertal (14-15years). Which is also when academies are selected etc so more pressure on performance, intensity and workload. This causes issues and leads to injuries Combine that with poor technical coaching the 14-15year old is in a period of unprecedented stress Prior to circa pubertal daily bowling is key. Myelination requires frequency of practice & pre pubertal is perfect both technically & physically for a fast bowler. This is why the best coaches need to be down here! Bowling is 90% CNS & 10% Muscular. Neural draining is the main concern from bowling. The higher the speed / intent of bowling the more intense & neurally demanding the session However, the high intensity bowling sessions that beginners perform must be taken relatively; the beginner cannot generate enough energy output to overload their nervous systems in a way that would stand to cause significant CNS fatigue A beginner will need rest just as a top bowler does from any muscular performance. ‘The difference is that while a top athlete will likely require at least double the length of time for CNS recovery than for muscular recovery, a beginner will have full CNS recovery by the time his muscular system has recovered’ CF A beginner then has a somewhat altered capacity to perform daily “high intensity’ work rather than every two or more days for the advanced athlete. The beginner has no need for active recovery and low intensity training (tempo bowl etc.) in the early stages of their career. It would be pointless to have a deload/ taper period for a bowler who is performing press ups for strength!! It may be "high" intensity for him/her, but is simply not generating the output necessary to expend time on a recovery period. Until the muscles are developed, the athlete cannot operate under the physical stress that would require workload management & constraints This understanding should guide workload guidelines around the world & also competition formats
