I got laid off from Google recently and I don’t know what to do or how to feel. Friends have told me to take some time to process but I feel like I don’t have time to process. I need to find another job, figure out health insurance, layoff logistics, interview prep, fix my resume, move back in with my parents?? and like a million other things. I see a lot of people online saying that getting laid off was the best thing that has happened to them but that’s not the case for 99% of people. If you’re laid off with 500k in savings, a booming social media, partner/parents to take care of you, a side hustle that’s making you money etc, then sure, maybe you can bet on yourself and take some time to process but most people can’t. Now I know I am in a fortunate place and do have some savings from working in tech for 3 years but as an only child from an immigrant family who is trying to support and retire his parents, I feel an immense pressure to find another job as quickly as I can. I’m worried, anxious, scared, shocked, and feeling a bunch of other emotions but I can’t dwell on it. The work needs doing and I need to grind because time is ticking. In an era of big tech layoffs, I hope to share what life is like after layoffs and document my job search process here to show what it actually looks like after getting laid off and NOT going all in on myself and end up homeless. note: if you know me/my family personally, please don’t tell my parents 😅😅 #techlayoffs #layoffs #laidoff

The person who always delivered results, stayed late when necessary, and solved problems quietly disappears from the team — while others who contribute far less remain. 2️⃣ The reason often has little to do with competence. In many organizations, layoffs are not purely performance decisions. They are structural decisions driven by budgets, departments, and how easily a role can be redistributed among the remaining team members. 3️⃣ Highly capable employees often handle multiple responsibilities efficiently. Ironically, that flexibility can make them appear “replaceable” in the eyes of management. If someone performs several tasks well, leaders may assume those tasks can simply be spread across the rest of the team after layoffs. 4️⃣ Toxic employees sometimes survive these cuts for a different reason: visibility. People who constantly defend their territory, speak loudly about their contributions, or build strong internal alliances can make their role appear harder to eliminate — even if their actual output is lower. 5️⃣ This doesn’t mean competence is a disadvantage. But it highlights an uncomfortable truth about many workplaces: performance alone doesn’t always determine security. Visibility, perceived specialization, and internal relationships often influence decisions just as much as the actual quality of someone’s work.
