THAs a person who is always cold, I’ve tried many different outerwear solutions and I think I have finally cracked the “cold girl” code 🥶
Before I get into the coats themselves, you need to know that what’s under your coat can sometimes be just as important! Especially when hiking or doing other exerting activities, the key is that you prevent the sweat! AKA make sure you are layering well! I usually start with a merino wool base layer. I love merino wool because it’s moisture wicking and temperature regulating (plus is doesn’t get stinky😂)
On top of my base layer, I’ll layer differently based on the weather, however these are my go-to outer layers that I keep reaching for when the weather starts turning:

Now let’s talk layering. I’m a perpetually cold person who has been skiing since she was 2, backcountry and mountaineering skiing since she was a teen, and teaching her kids to ski for 9 years now- I have my systems dialed so I thought I’d share some insight.
❄️Freezing Ski Day Layering❄️
🧥Outerlayer
Stio Figment or Environ bibs + jacket. Waterproof, windproof, roomy enough for lots of layers, but still looks cute. That’s rare. I’ve been trusting Stio for 15 years now, the gear is amazing and holds up.
👚Base
When it’s really cold, I go with a thicker thermal top and bottoms like the Stio Basis PeakWool or Trax Power Grid (my go-to for backcountry days because of the long front zip).
👕Midlayer
This is where most go wrong. A fleece won’t cut it on a negative day. The Stio Dawner Insulated Jacket has become my everything jacket in fall and winter paired with the Fernos Insulated Knicker. These have completely changed cold ski days for me.
I top it off with a Thermic heated vest for extra-cold days. Yea battery power.

Thermic heated mittens- turn it up to level 3!
Thermic heated socks or the heated insoles- sometimes I do both, not joking.
Having severe Raynaud’s means staying warm is something I’ve had to work very hard at, but it’s worth it because being in the mountains is my happy place. So ask me questions, I have a lot of experience to share.

• Hometown Down Jacket
I’ve owned plenty of puffies in my life and this is my favorite! So incredibly warm, can stuff it into a super small bag, and it’s so lightweight. I love this jacket so much, probably my most recommended if you get cold easy.
• Second Light Windshell
Obviously this isn’t an insulating layer, but if you’re pursuing any active missions that require you to strip down layers, this windshell is soo essential! Great to throw it on before you pop out on the ridge or if the wind picks up. It’s the most breathable windshell I’ve owned as well, so I’m not scared to sweat. I wear this layer all year round.
• Environ Ski Jacket
Les be honest, Goretex is not in our medical school budget at the moment, but this Environ set has been perfect! It’s served me well for 3 seasons now, took it to Japan, had some epic weather, held up great. A note about the bibs, they have a full zips, so when nature calls, you can unzip from the TOP and do what you gotta do without taking off all your clothes. Pretty convenient if you ask me.

COMargy’s Hut: The second oldest backcountry hut in Colorado and my first overnight ski trip!Still sore from the 6 mile skin up to 11,300’, but the alpenglow views at night while enjoying the perfect hikertrash ramen made everything 100% worth it 🛖🍜🏔️.

_DOur 2 year old already has 16 days on her season pass! 🤯
Most of those days I’m solo with her and her baby sister while our oldest is in ski or snowboard school.
If you’ve seen me in the parking lot, you know I’ve got a system — because my hands are always full.
She’s strong and independent, but I still end up carrying her skis more often than not.
