Making a super ultralight Windshell is daunting. The 10d fabric is so slippery and fluid that it can be a real struggle to sew. I bought this orange 0.66oz Membrane 10 fabric in 2017! Ive been scared to sew it for years! With inspiration and excitement from pattern testers of the updated UL Windshell pattern (releases soon) I finally dove in! Jacket came out great and weighs a scant 2.75oz (78g)! I’ll share my tips and hacks at sewing this fabric in an article soon but here’s some quick hits. 1. Select the right needle and thread. You want small ball point needle to limit seam elongation. I used an 80/12 needle with Mara 100 (tex35) thread for all construction seams and topstitching. 2. Lower your presser foot pressure. Lower it ALOT! 3. Use a straight stitch needle plate and avoid zigzag stitching. Your machine is hungry for this fabric. The smaller the needle opening in the needle plate, the better of you are. 4. Stitch confidently! Use a short stitch length. 2.5mm was a good balance of speed and strength. Topstitch with 3-3.5mm. Serger or overcast raw seams after to wrangle fray. #myog #ulwindshell @ripstopbytheroll @bernetteusa

Three takeaways from this video: 1: Start that project — if you have been procrastinating to start a specific project lately, whether it’s because you’re stuck in planning-the-perfect-thing or ✨ analysis paralysis ✨ mode, or because it’s a simple project you can’t find the motivation for like me: time to get started! Two months ago I wrapped the Sam Splint in that blue piece of ripstop and stuffed them in my WIP-projects drawer, unmotivated to start. But in the end it took less than 30 min to make this drawstring bag this week, and that’s incl. time spent filming! 2: Finish that project — if you have a ton of projects that you started, but cannot find the motivation to finish them: try to finish one that’s almost done! As you all know, that’s another one of my pitfalls — and the whole reason I started this series of #UnfinishedSewingBusiness. Making these videos helps massively to hold myself accountable, and many of you also shared that these videos helped to find motivation for your own projects. So consider this one another reminder: you got this! 3: Stay safe on outdoor adventures — especially with the rise of all kinds of outdoor sports content being shared on social media these days: be smart and stay safe. Don’t blindly follow viral videos you see online, and when trying something you’ve never done before: consider hiring a guide, joining a more experienced friend, or following a course. Make sure you’re well prepared, bring the appropriate gear, clothing & safety equipment, know the risks, what to do in case of emergency, and leave no trace 🌸 My account is predominantly about sewing, but because I also share snippets of climbing & hiking trips every now and then, this video seemed like a good opportunity to touch upon the safety aspects of these sports. Most people stitch the gusset over the face, use a bunch of clips, and cut relief notches into the corners to make it work. Try flipping the method. Lay the gusset down first. Keep it straight on the stitch line. Put the face on top and curve the face around the gusset — not the other way around. Clip your centers together, but start stitching near the curve. It makes it much easier to close cleanly. Make sure both edges stay aligned as you sew. If they drift, you’ll end up with excess or shortage in the #bagmaking #myog #sewingtips #industrialsewing #handmadegear
