In all seriousness, parenting two very different children has been challenging and beautiful in ways that I could never have prepared for. Here are things that I believe to be especially helpful for kiddos who are highly sensitive and/or crave control more than the average child (I’ll save the way-too-fearless second child tips for another reel😂)
-OT (and dedicating time and effort into finding the right fit)
-Feelings dolls
-Providing access to sensory-friendly tools like weighted blankets, swings, fidgets, and crash pads
-Readjusting my own expectations and trying to always be mindful about when I start to care too much about how other people are perceiving us
-visual schedules
-trying to always play a balancing act of providing boundaries while also sharing control when it’s just not necessary for me to have it
-remembering that we truly cannot make another human eat or sleep in the ways we probably expected they would. Releasing any expectations or pressure from other people around what eating “should” look like
I’m trying and falling down all the time throughout this parenting journey. In it with you❤️

DRMillennial and gen z moms are doing powerful work shifting this narrative🥺Boomer parents never really had the kind of access to education about how these appearance-based comments about ourselves can impact children-but we do. And we’re slowly changing things in my opinion❤️
As parents, I think it’s important for us to understand deeply that we hold a lot of power in terms of shaping our kids’ body image.
It’s not enough to simply not comment negatively about their bodies. We need to refrain from saying these negative things about our own bodies, and all bodies. Why? Because kids can understand and grasp this idea (from quite a young age): my mom is saying that she hates her body. The same body that mine may one day look very similar to…or: my mom is saying she feels ugly. But everyone tells me I look like her.
And that’s understandably confusing and scary for kids. So let’s all continue to work together to refrain from commenting negatively on ANY bodies (And even further, let’s work to uplift and celebrate body diversity in all forms)🙌
