VII know medium format cameras aren’t usually built with street photography in mind, unless we’re talking about the Fujifilm GFX100RF, which is truly a street photography beast.
But my heart genuinely goes to this combination: the Fujifilm GFX100S II paired with the Fujifilm GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR. Being only a bit larger than many full-frame setups, it still feels surprisingly comfortable to carry around in the streets.
What really makes it special is how it performs, fast autofocus, beautiful colors, and that medium format look that gives the images a slightly different, almost otherworldly feel. It’s a combination I keep coming back to and genuinely enjoy shooting with every time. 📸

IMI’m going to make reels in IMAX.
This is the cheapest IMAX camera you can buy. Fujifilm just announced that their GFX Eterna 55 cinema camera has officially been IMAX certified. Now, IMAX certified means that you can use this camera for the Filmed For IMAX banner, stuff like Top Gun: Maverick and DUNE. It’s not a Filmed With IMAX camera. That is still reserved for 15/70 celluloid productions like Nolan’s the Odyssey. But this is a really big deal, because IMAX certified cameras have historically been prohibitively expensive. The Arri ALEXA LF can push over 100 grand, and even the cheaper stuff from Red is still over $30,000. But the GFX Eterna 55 is 16 and a half grand, meaning large format cinema that’s actually approved by IMAX to have IMAX branding and marketing is getting more and more accessible. The GFX Eterna 55 is a beautiful camera that inherits the medium format sensor that they use in their GFX mirrorless cameras. But it is purpose built for cinema productions, meaning it has every bell and whistle that you’d want for a professional workflow. If you want a really great example of what this camera is capable of, check out the short film OKAY. It was shot by my buddy Oren Soffer, who worked with Greig Fraser on The Creator. All in all, as I always say, cameras are not the thing that makes or breaks a movie or cinematography. But I am all for technology democratizing and disrupting the industry to make things easier and easier to create at a high level. And this also means we are well on our way to a sub-$10,000 large format cinema camera that you or I could purchase to create IMAX movies, and that is a really big deal.

JAHow cool are these 2 cameras!!! I’ve had the 35mm for a long while but never used it until today. The medium format is NEW in box. I got both @retrophoto_reading who specializes in the thing I despise….film. I also spoke to @petermckinnon who has used both of these cameras to get some tips. I ran 1 test roll throughout of these and wrote down all my settings and distances since you have to do everything manually. We’ll see how they turn out. Then I want to take them to all the baseball stadiums and try to do something cool. This is an interesting mental exercise.

KDHow much of our gear obsession is just based on 100 years of marketing?
It's called "Full Frame" like it's the standard of quality, but it was actually the "Miniature Format" back in the day. It’s just a clever 1920s hack that the industry rebranded so well we forgot it’s really just a middle ground.
And, it isn’t even the biggest sensor available; Medium Format makes "Full" look small. But the branding worked. It made everything else feel like a "crop" and turned a century-old orientation shortcut into a professional requirement.
Are the differences between these formats actually significant for your work, or are we just buying into the hype?
