When astronauts return to Earth after spending time in space, their bodies have to readjust to gravity, which can be a challenging process. In microgravity, muscles and bones don’t work as hard, so astronauts often experience muscle weakness and bone density loss. Once back on Earth, they may feel unsteady, dizzy, or weak, and simple movements like standing or walking can be difficult at first. Their sense of balance can also be off because the inner ear adapts to weightlessness in space. To help with recovery, astronauts go through medical checks and a structured rehabilitation program that includes physical therapy and exercise. Over days or weeks, their strength, coordination, and balance gradually return as their bodies relearn how to function under gravity.
