The 23-year-old Brando performed a five-minute test for Warner Bros. based on a different script, which was later abandoned. The studio eventually revived the title in the 1950s for a new project. Marlon Brando's first screen role was a few years later as a war veteran in "The Men" (1950), directed by Fred Zinnemann. That project launched his Hollywood career just before he achieved massive stardom by reprising his Broadway role in the film adaptation of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951).

Luckily for Matt Ross, he drew on his childhood growing up with an alternative off-grid lifestyle in the Pacific Northwest, dissimilar from that in the film. The actors went on a two-day survival trip and slept together as a family in a hut they built made of ferns. They learned how to track and start a fire with a bow drill, read a lot, and learned about the world’s political systems.
