One of the most frequent �questions I get asked is “How many languages do you speak?” and “Where are you from?”. 1. I speak six different languages but two of them (German and Swedish) are not from the same never have to think about them / never make a mistake in them-level so I often say I speak five. Although my German is pretty on par with someone who’s been studying the language for years if you drop me back for three days in Berlin. Swedish is baaaaasic. My biggest pet peeve I guess is when someone says “Oh, I speak Spanish too” because they know the phrase “Hola! Cómo estás?” 2. I get it, the accent, it’s hard to place. It’s somewhat Dutch but not as pronounced and it makes people wonder. I feel I get laughed at in every language with my accent lol. The Spanish will make jokes about my “r” whereas the Latinx community in the US will tell me I sound “so Spanish”. Even in my home country Belgium, I’ve been made fun of my “r” sounds; a consonant that can be easily hidden in English but in the US it’s the overall accent mystery (only admiration however from the Americans 🙏). The French will say that I sound very Belgian, where we speak French indeed, it’s just not my first language. The biggest tip for learning a new language: MOVIES! It’s the oldest (and cheapest) trick in the book. Making your hearing accustomed to new sounds while getting visual support of context + subtitles. By the age of eleven I already spoke decent English just from listening to English through songs and series on television without any single English class ever. I wish I did a better job with my own daughter but she pretty much refuses to watch any Peppa Pig episode or Disney movie that is not in English.
