What does this mean?
Artemis II astronauts will return to Earth by landing in the Pacific Ocean,
near the coast of San Diego.
This is called a splashdown.
After completing their journey around the Moon,
the Orion spacecraft will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed,
protected by a heat shield.
Parachutes will then deploy to slow it down,
and the capsule will safely land in the ocean.
Why ocean landing?
Water helps absorb the impact,
making it safer for astronauts compared to land landing.
Recovery teams and ships are already positioned
to quickly reach and retrieve the crew.
This method was also used in Apollo missions,
and NASA is continuing it for Artemis.
The mission doesn’t end in space.
It ends with a safe return.
Reaching the Moon is important.
Coming back safely is everything.
