🤖 Disney debuted a walking, autonomous Olaf robot at NVIDIA GTC
🔥 The hardest engineering problem actually wasn’t balance. It was keeping the motors from overheating inside a heat-trapping foam costume.
🧠 So they trained the robot to self-regulate its own temperature using reinforcement learning - it adjusts posture and motor load before hitting critical heat.
🎢 All of it was trained in Kamino, Disney’s GPU-powered simulator — thousands of parallel robot versions, learning in hours.

MUNVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang unveiled a real-world robotic Olaf from Disney’s Frozen during his GTC 2026 keynote.
The free-roaming animatronic—developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with NVIDIA and Disney Research—walks, talks, balances, reacts, and interacts naturally with guests.
Trained using NVIDIA-powered simulations (100,000 virtual copies in Isaac Sim with Newton physics engine), it learned screen-accurate movements in just two days on an RTX 4090 GPU.
Olaf debuts at Disneyland Paris (World of Frozen) on March 29, 2026, then Hong Kong Disneyland.
This marks Disney’s first fully animated character brought to life with AI-driven robotics for theme parks.

At the 2026 NVIDIA GTC keynote, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang presented a real‑world robotic version of Olaf, the beloved Frozen character. The project was developed in collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, Disney Research, and Alphabet’s DeepMind, and will be featured in World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris.
The demonstration highlighted how modern robotics blends artificial intelligence, simulation, and physics to train movement before hardware exists. Engineers used NVIDIA Omniverse and Isaac Sim to build detailed digital environments modeling real forces like gravity, balance, and terrain. Within these simulated worlds, thousands of virtual robots learned motion and balance using reinforcement learning powered by physics solvers including the NVIDIA Newton engine.
Once the simulated model mastered movement, its behaviors were transferred to the physical robot. The Olaf robot seen at GTC can walk, balance, and behave in ways that reflect its virtual training. This workflow allows robots to be trained far faster than relying solely on real‑world testing.
The use of Omniverse and AI tools reflects a shift in interactive robot development. Instead of programming every movement manually, simulation‑trained models enable systems to generalize and adapt naturally to physical environments. While this Olaf is designed for guest interaction and entertainment, the technologies behind it suggest broader applications for adaptive, intelligent machines in real settings.
