Ogre-faced Netcaster I’ve wanted to find this species and specifically get this shot for a solid year. I’ve met a few of the netcasting species (Deinopis) but the aptly named Ogre-Faced flavour continued to allude me. One of my most favorite spiders, this is Deinopis aspectans, aka the ogre faced net casting spider! These spiders catch their prey in a awesomely unusual way. They spin a rectangular web, and then they detach it and hold it while hanging vertically. When prey passes underneath them, they drop it on them from above! To aid in this they place some white poo on the surface directly below where they are hanging with their net/web, and uses the white spots for aiming! Those two large front eyes that give them their unusual look are actually quite amazing in their own right. These eyes are able to gather available light more efficiently than the eyes of cats and owls, and are 2000 times more sensitive to light than human photoreceptors! This is despite the fact that they lack a reflective layer. Instead, each night, a large area of light-sensitive membrane is manufactured within the eyes, and destroyed at dawn. Look into those angel eyes 🤩 The ogre-faced and net casting spiders have a unique adaption in the animal world, their sensitive membranes inside their eyes MELT every day. Hang on Jack, why the heck would these animals evolve such fragile eyes? That seems a bit ridiculous! Well my friends, their eyes are actually so unbelievably powerful and well adapted for hunting in low light conditions, they simply can’t exist during the day. The photosensitive membrane lining these spiders’ eyes allows them near perfect nocturnal vision, even better than cats and owls but due to the lack of an iris in spider eyes this membrane gets destroyed by the light of the sun every day. These spiders hunt by holding wooly webs out in front of them and quickly ensnaring prey as it flies through the air so eyesight is crucial in their survival! Not to worry though, as even though this membrane is destroyed by the morning sun, it regrows every night to allow these spiders to once again take up their nets and hunt their prey! Isn’t this a fantastic adaptation? This funky looking fella is the ogre-faced spider. With super elongated legs and a pretty lengthy abdomen as well, their proportions seem completely off. However, their coolest attribute actually comes with their behaviour, giving the nickname of net casting spiders. Rather than sitting on web like the other arachnids, they will actually suspend themselves and spin some silk across their front legs. When an insect is nearby, they spring forwards and stretch the web they're holding around the other animal to snag it up. How cool is that!? Check out @johnny_venom for much more!
