📍 Located @fernbankscience ,you will find the Dr. Ralph L. Buice, Jr. Observatory. The observatory houses the largest telescope in the Southeast dedicated to public viewing and education! NOTE: this is at Fernbank Science Center and NOT Fernbank Museum!
📆 If weather permits and skies are clear, they offer free viewing on Thursday and Friday evenings! You can view Saturn’s rings, lunar craters, and deep-sky objects like nebulae and star clusters. We saw Jupiter over 1/2 a billion miles away!
🌕 Viewing times change depending on the month:
March - May: 9:00 - 10:00 PM
June - July: 9:30 - 10:30 PM
August - October: 8:30 - 10:00 PM
November - February: 8:00 - 10:00 PM
*Fall and winter are the best options for families with littles, but it’s worth staying out late for 🤍
🔭The telescope is a 0.9 meter (36-inch) Cassegrain reflector beneath a 10 meter (30 ft.) dome. This is one of the largest instruments ever dedicated to education and public viewing! The line to the telescope will be cut off 15 minutes prior to closing time to enable all viewing to be completed by the scheduled closing time. You can call a 1/2 hour before opening time on the day of your visit for observatory updates!

HAWe explored the iconic Palomar Observatory, which is home to some of the world’s most renowned telescopes! Located in the beautiful Palomar Mountain in Southern California, this observatory has been a hub for astronomical discoveries since 1948.
🔭 Hale Telescope: At the heart of the observatory is the massive Hale Telescope, boasting a 200-inch (5.1-meter) mirror. It was the world’s largest telescope for 45 years and remains one of the most productive research instruments in astronomy.
🔭 Samuel Oschin Telescope: This 48-inch (1.2-meter) Schmidt camera has been pivotal in various sky surveys, contributing to the discovery of numerous asteroids and comets.
🔭 Palomar Testbed Interferometer: Though no longer in operation, this telescope was used for pioneering work in optical interferometry, helping astronomers refine their techniques in star and exoplanet observation.
🔭 60-inch Telescope: Used primarily for educational purposes and public outreach, this telescope allows visitors to get hands-on experience with stargazing and learn about the cosmos.

BAA quick visit to an astronomer’s paradise, where exploration of the universe happens at its cutting edge. A notable part of my career has been documenting the world’s observatories at night, both for @twanight project and for science organizations such as @nsfgov or @esoastronomy who require images to communicate science with public.
Timelapse 1: @keckobservatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, sending a laser beam to create a guide star for Adaptive Optics system.
2: Despite being close to the light of Tucson and Phoenix in Arizona, @kittpeakobservatory continues research with multiple telescopes. The observatory also has public programs.
3: The top of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain, is the European stargazing paradise, home to many telescopes including @magictelescopes that detect powerful gamma ray sources in the universe.
4: A strikingly dark night of La Silla Observatory in Chile.
5: The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona.
6: A giant telescope with an 8-meter mirror begins a night shift inside one of domes at Very Large Telescope array (VLT), Cerro Paranal, Atacama Desert,, Chile.
7-8: At 5000m elevation of Andes, overlooking Atacama in Chile, an array of 66 radio telescopes serves @alma.observatory, to explore the sky at night and day, and even through the clouds.

GL✨️ Extraordinary view of the Cosmos by Vera C. Rubin Observatory ✨️
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has unveiled a breathtaking image showing around 10 million galaxies, made from over 1,100 separate images.
What’s even more astounding? This is just 0.05% of the 20 billion galaxies the observatory will capture during its upcoming 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST).
Located atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, Rubin Observatory boasts the world’s largest 3200 megapixel digital camera and a powerful data system to process the universe like never before.
Beginning in 2025, Rubin will scan the entire visible sky every night, creating an ultra-detailed time-lapse of the cosmos.
This will help scientists track everything from asteroids and supernovae to dark matter and dark energy,the mysterious substances making up 95% of the universe.
Named after American Astronomer Vera C. Rubin, who provided the first solid evidence of dark matter, the observatory continues her legacy by pushing the frontiers of cosmic discovery.

NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory is nearing the end of construction on Cerro Pachón in Chile, getting ready for its quest to #CaptureTheCosmos with first light expected later this year. It’s named after astronomer Vera Rubin, who provided the first convincing evidence for the existence of dark matter.
Rubin will generate an ultra-high-resolution, ultra-high-definition time-lapse of our Universe and the greatest cosmic movie ever made — the decade-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). It is the only observatory in the world that is capable of this feat!
With its immense data set, Rubin will open doors to discoveries about:

El Observatorio Vera C. Rubin de NSF-DOE se acerca al final de su construcción en Cerro Pachón en Chile, preparándose para su misión de #CapturarElCosmos, cuya primera luz será este año. El observatorio lleva el nombre de la astrónoma Vera Rubin, que aportó las primeras pruebas convincentes de la existencia de la materia oscura.
Rubin generará un time-lapse de nuestro Universo en ultra alta resolución y ultra alta definición, creando la película cósmica más grande de todos los tiempos: la Investigación del Espacio-Tiempo como Legado para la posteridad (LSST por sus siglas en inglés), que se desarrollará durante una década. ¡Es el único observatorio del mundo capaz de lograr esta hazaña!
