I’ve decided to take part in #marchmeethemaker2025 The first prompt is a brand reintroduction 👩🏻‍🎨 I’m Lauren, a pattern designer from the UK. I taught myself how to design in 2017 when I was backpacking Southeast Asia - it was very basic but I fell in love with pattern designing. My style significantly improved after taking Immersion in 2023. I now create repeating patterns for licensing (I sell directly and I also list patterns for licensing on Patternbank). I have a shop on Spoonflower with hundreds of designs 🤩 My style is usually whimsical and full (I’m a maximalist!), although I add lighter/breezier patterns in my collections for some breathing room. I love seeing my designs out in the world and always love it when people share what they have made with my designs #marchmeethemaker @marchmeetthemaker #brand #brandintroduction #patterndesigner #surfacepatterndesign #surfacedesigner #pattern #patterndesign #repeatpattern #seamlesspatterns

What I Wish I Had Known 7 years ago When I Started My Online Design Business ⏳ You know that beautiful chaos of homeschooling three kids? I decided to add "pattern designer" to the mix! Talk about a plot twist! 😄 While most of my days are filled with science experiments and math lessons, I've managed to build a thriving pattern design business in between spelling tests and snack times. Here's the thing - some days feel like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle (fellow moms, you know what I mean!), but I wouldn't have it any other way. Creating patterns brings me so much joy, and being able to do it while staying present for my kids? That's the real masterpiece! If you're ready to turn your creative chaos into a successful pattern design business (even if your "office" is sometimes the kitchen table!), then comment "UNLEASH" to learn my step-by-step method! #procreate #procreateillustration #procreatetutorial #drawing #logo #digitalart #digitalillustration #procreate #patterndesign #surfacepatterndesigner #surfacepatterndesign #textiledesigner #patternlove #fabricdesign #seamlesspattern #patternartist #surfacepatterncommunity #printandpattern #artlicensing #procreatedesign #digitalartist #artlicensing #madeonipad

Ever felt pressured to chase the latest surface design trends? 🌈🦄 Same. I fell hard into the unicorn trend black hole once. But here’s the truth: 👉 You do not have to follow trends to be a successful artist or creative entrepreneur. I’ve heard it from art agents, licensing directors, and successful surface designers—timeless subjects always win out. ✨ If you’re a digital artist, pattern designer, or working toward art licensing, here are 4 evergreen themes that never go out of style: 🌸 Flowers 🦋 Butterflies 🐦 Birds 🎄 Holidays My own butterfly designs are proof: they’re still landing licensing deals years later. So if unicorns and rainbows don’t light you up, don’t force it. Draw what you love. Let your creativity guide your business—not just market trends. 🎯 The art that feels like you is the art that lasts. 💬 Tag a fellow designer who needs this pep talk. 📩 Want weekly creative biz advice + tips? 💫A bit of my story… but mostly, I want to the little voice today that tells you to never forget how powerful you are. You have strengths and potentials that will unfold as you go on your path. But go! Go for your dreams, persist and have faith… When obstacles will appear, you will find resources in you that were not even aware of. The important is to go and keep learning. 💫 For the ones who are new here, I am Emilie, a French doll maker and pattern designer based in New York. My journey to becoming a Surface Pattern Designer! I started out as a Dental Hygiene major (and took 30 credit hours of the hardest classes, RIP Human Anatomy) But once I did the shadowing hours, I realized I would have been bored to death cleaning people’s teeth. But I do love to tell my hygienists that I almost had the same career as them, each time I have my teeth cleaned! My gears shifted and I scrambled to apply to BYU’s Graphic Design program. I had two weeks to create a portfolio before the deadline. I did Graphic Design even though my heart yearned for Illustration. But the Illustration program required a full sketchbook and I couldn’t do that in two weeks. After school I worked for a crafting company and then moved into the tech world. I had a blast working at Weave. I saw myself grow as a designer and a professional. Once my son was born, my priorities shifted. Motherhood was such a blessing because it constricted my time and made me cut out anything I didn’t absolutely love. I knew I wanted to be a pattern designer and becoming a mother gave me the courage to make the jump! I stayed up late creating a portfolio and then sent it out to 150 companies! And 6 people said yes! I am forever grateful to them for taking a chance on me. Now here I am! Working and being an illustrator as my career. Do you think it would have been quicker if I had just started as an Illustration major to begin with? Maybe. But I’m grateful for my skills as a graphic designer because I’m able to design my own brand book and pitches in a style I’m confident with. Who knows what is next! But for now, lots of beautiful patterns are in my future!

Elena Ilyasova (@efi_little_things) is a toy maker and pattern designer based in Oxford, England. Raised in a family of creatives, she learned to sew, knit, and crochet from a young age, making her first soft toy when she was just seven, and hasn’t stopped since. Her career took off when she started sharing the stuffed toys she had made for her own children on social media, which quickly led to a stream of orders and the creation of her brand Efi Little Things. Through her brand, she makes soft toy patterns for companies and individuals. Her designs are inspired by the woodland creatures that populated traditional tales. The aim of her work is to support both small businesses and craft lovers in keeping this tradition alive while promoting sustainable, handmade items over mass-produced toys. When she’s not creating her own designs, she shares her knowledge with others through online classes and tutorials. My top tips (save this post for later): ⬇️ 🌼 EXPERIENCE 🌼 Before you start applying for tester calls: gain some experience in crochet and reading patterns. Maybe purchase some that you like and crochet those projects. You’ll need to know how patterns work in order to help test them hehe! 🍃 YOUR WORK 🍃 Your work needs to be shown on your feed!! If you don’t have any posts up where you show your work, how is the creator going to know how awesome your work is and that you are a crocheter who can test for them? 🦙 PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY 🦙 I can not stress enough that if your photography is good, you’ll get picked for EVERY SINGLE TESTER CALL. Make sure, you have good lighting. Harsh shadows are something you don’t want in your picture. Indirect light coming through a window is the perfect lighting that you can possibly get! You can enhance this even further with good editing. I use Adobe Lightroom for this. And I have a reel of both the photography and the editing up on my Insta :) 🌳 QUALITY 🌳 I can only speak for myself when I am saying that I like to look out for work that has some even stitching and is looking very nice over all. At the end the pattern designer wants the pattern testers piece to come out as they envisioned it to. If your stitching isn’t super even yet just keep practicing and try to finish a project in one go! It will come over time 🤍 I hope those tips were helpful and if you are following them I can 100% promise you that you’ll be picked for tester calls as no one has ever before 🥹🤍🦙🌳🍃🌼 #testercall #patterntesterswanted #crochethacks #crochettips #crochettestercall

I've never made outfits for QuiltCon before and honestly, I'm not sure what came over me this year. The week before QuiltCon was like a fever dream of hyperfocus and woven fabrics. 😂 Before I knew it, I had a handmade outfit for each day. I've enjoyed learning how to sew garments and I definitely see myself making more in the future. Pattern details below: 1. Pattern: The Marina Dress by @pinsnpatterns . Fabric: one Garden Variety FQ bundle by @annamariahorner @annamariatextiles plus a few added in @rubystarsociety wovens. The patchwork seams are serged and there is a lining in the bodice. This pattern was VERY good and easy to follow. 2. Pattern: #sidetiedungarees by @sasha__starlight . Fabric: Favorite Flowers Meadow Canvas in Natural by @rubystarsociety . This pattern designer might be my new favorite. The pattern had a lot of steps but it was incredibly detailed and easy for a beginner like me! 3. Pattern: #saguaropants by @fridaypatterncompany and the Front Tie Top by @unfetteredpatterns . Fabric: pink and red woven check from @merchantandmills . The two patterns for the set were great, and it was my second time making the Saguaro pants (love them!). The undershirt was a horrible pattern, I think it was an AI pattern - I don't recommend beginners but patterns on Etsy. 4. Pattern: #saguaroset by @fridaypatterncompany . Fabrics: Woven neon Dobby fabrics I found on Etsy from a shop based in India. I love Friday Pattern Company! I modified the pattern to give the set this cute split two tone effect. #memade #quiltcon2026

Look how cute this Ireland themed fabric is I’m obsessed 🤩 One thing I’ve come to appreciate since starting my small business is how much time love and effort goes into it so I knew I wanted to support small to execute the vision I had for framing my Ireland paintings I worked with a pattern designer from my Instagram community to develop the fabric of my dreams to bring this project to life! Just look at all the little details and clovers! In the words of my husband she slayed 💅 After assembling the frames I hung them up in our living room next to our travel map to help remind us of our lovely travel memories I love the way this turned out all thanks to @hollymartindesigns and her gorgeous pattern design and now I’ll just be staring at them until I can go back to Ireland for real! ☘️ #design #acrylic #flowers #folkart #diy #painting #decor #cottage #vintage #plants #houseplants #plantpots #cottagecore #slowliving #upcycle #thrifting #art #vintage #grannyhobbies #crafting #ireland #watercolor
