These are the 3 trimming tools I use the most. They are all I need for rounding the bottoms. Plus they are cheap and last ages: 1. Shredder: I use the Mudtools one. Love this one to quickly removing the excess clay from the bottom edge. Does an excellent job smoothing out uneven areas without catching on the bumps. 2. Firm steel kidney rib: Cheap unbranded one. I use it to remove a little excess clay from the bottom or any wiring marks. 3. Flexible steel kidney rib: Cheap unbranded one. This works almost like a loop trimming tool, but since it has so much usable edge, wears off much slower. I've been using them for 7+ years and haven't needed to replace them yet. They work great for light trimming jobs like tiding up a bottom without a foot. To turn a foot or more intricate turning work, my go to are the Xiem Tools heat-treated loop tools. #studioceramics #handmadepottery #modernceramics #potterystudio #handmadebusiness #handemadeceramics #handemadeceramics #potterywheel #potterytools #potterylove

Request A Project series: Wavy Mug, Part 1 In this first video, I’ll show you how I made the body of this mug. In Part 2, I’ll show the making of the handle. For this wavy mug, I roll the slabs to about 1/8 of an inch and (not shown in the video) I take the time to compress both sides of the slab very well with a metal rib in order to make the slabs stronger and prevent cracks. I do also compress the top rim of the rectangle for the mug to have a thinner rim. I create the waves when the clay is nice and soft. Once I’m happy with the shape, I let it dry under plastic until it’s leather hard, and then I smooth it and add the coil and base. Small jars have a lot of steps, this one started as a closed form but needed major modifications to fit right. Although I initially intended for it to be taller I actually like its final size, a low shallow dish. Due to how the lid sat almost inside the base part I had to add a way to lift it off, and because of the size I thought a delicate little pinch knob would be fun. For carving I waited a bit for it to reach a nice refrigerated chocolate stage. I pre-carved sections so the wall was very thin, making it easier to cut out the holes on the slightly dryer clay.
