1) Olympic-Level Athlete I have literally seen applicants who competed at the Olympics or at a national elite level in their sport. Even if it is not the Olympics, being at that high level shows insane discipline, time management, and resilience. Med schools know you cannot fake that kind of long term commitment. 2) Working with Incarcerated Populations Some applicants spent years volunteering or working inside prisons or with formerly incarcerated individuals. That kind of experience exposes you to complex social and health inequities that most premeds never see. It shows maturity, empathy, and a willingness to work with underserved communities in a very real way. 3) Chef or Catering Business Owner I have seen people who were professional chefs or started their own catering businesses before medicine. Running a food business takes leadership, customer service skills, and the ability to perform under pressure. It also makes for amazing interview stories because it is so different from the typical research assistant path. 4) Years of Industry Experience as an Engineer or Computer Scientist Some applicants worked full time in tech or engineering for years before applying. That depth of industry experience shows problem solving, teamwork, and real world accountability. It also brings a totally different perspective to medicine, especially with how important technology is becoming in healthcare. 5) Content Creator Yes, I have seen serious content creators with large platforms apply to med school. Building an audience requires communication skills, consistency, and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly. When done thoughtfully, it can show leadership and impact beyond your immediate circle. At the end of the day, do not just copy these. Unique does not automatically mean good or bad, it just helps you stand out from a sea of similar applications. These are just examples to show how creative you can be with extracurriculars. The best activities are the ones you are genuinely interested in, even if you have never heard of anyone else doing something like that before. #premed #premedstudent #premedadvice #mcat #medicalschool

📌 comment “90DAY” and I’ll DM you my free 3 month MCAT study schedule so you can drastically improve the productivity of your study sessions knowing exactly what to study everyday for all 3 phases!!  More details about my 9 day rotation ⤵️ Each study day I would start at 8 am with one hour of CARS (30 min for 3 passages, 30 min to review) then do questions until lunch time, review questions after lunch, and spend the last hour of the day reviewing flash cards! By the way, Uworld was the question bank I used for this phase of my studying. One of the key strategies that helped me go from a 498 diagnostic score to becoming a 516-scorer on my final exam was *thoroughly* reviewing each practice exam! So that I knew to the T which questions I was missing over and over again and those tricky topics that simply needed more attention in my study schedule. #mcatstudy #mcatmotivation #premedstudent #premedadvice

SAVE THIS FOR LATER 🔥 Cold emailing or calling doctors can feel impossible 😭—but there’s a method that works. I’ve personally gotten 260+ hours of shadowing in just 7 months using this exact approach. Here’s how to get a YES 👇🏽 1️⃣ Start with your warmest connections Family doctor, your parent’s physician, or anyone you already know. They’re far more likely to say yes. 2️⃣ Cold email or call strategically Most premeds send generic messages—so no one responds. The trick: personalize, be concise, and show genuine interest. 💡 Sample email script: Subject: Shadowing Opportunity Hi Dr. [Last Name], My name is [Your Name], a [Year] student at [School]. I’m very interested in [Specialty] and admire your work on [specific paper/project]. I would love the opportunity to shadow you for a few hours to learn more about the field and observe patient care. I’m happy to work around your schedule. Thank you for your time and consideration! Best, [Your Name] 3️⃣ Follow up politely If you don’t hear back in 7–10 days, send a short follow-up. Persistence = results. ⚡ Tip: Keep a tracking spreadsheet with who you emailed, date, response, and follow-up. It keeps you organized and professional. 📩 Want my full Shadowing Guidebook with ready-to-fill templates for emails, calls, and follow-ups? I matched into a competitive residency and then a competitive fellowship as a DO and I’ve now seen the process from both sides of the table. Here’s what actually matters 👇 1) Letters of recommendation are likely THE most important part of your application for most residencies. Strong, specialty-specific letters can open doors. Weak ones quietly close them. 2) Grades & board scores can make or break you. They won’t get you interviews BUT they can eliminate you. You need to clear the academic bar and this should be your FIRST priority (especially during pre-clerkship years). 3) Research & leadership These opportunities are great supplements but do NOT substitute for 1 and 2. They don’t overcome weak letters or poor grades. 4) Reputation matters Medicine is small. Be someone people want to advocate for. Focus on what moves the needle and makes YOU UNIQUE not what just fills a CV! . . . . . . . . . #medstudentadvice #residencymatch #medschooladvice #medstudenttips #premedstudent

BS/MD program — was it worth it? 🎓🩺 Pros: • ⏳ Fast track to med school (biggest pro). 7 years total meant one less year of undergrad. • 📚 Focused on GPA + MCAT instead of stressing about padding a CV with research just to “publish.” I could pursue projects I actually cared about. • 🤝 Built really meaningful friendships within my cohort. Going through it together creates a different kind of bond. • 😌 Less stress about the increasing competitiveness of med school admissions. • 💰 Cost-effective (for me). Public undergrad + public med school + saving a year = overall cheaper. Cons: • 🔒 Less academic freedom. My schedule was packed with 3–4 science classes/semester, so I couldn’t keep taking Spanish like I wanted. • 🔥 Burnout. Took the MCAT after sophomore year and went straight into med school. No gap year, no real break. • 🌱 Maturity gap. Many of my classmates are late 20s/early 30s with full-time work experience and more life outside medicine. I tutored MCAT and traveled when I could, but unstructured time to grow would’ve been nice. Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat! If you’re considering BS/MD, feel free to ask me anything! If you’ve ever thought, “Maybe one more degree will do it,” this is your sign 😭 I finished my bachelor’s. Then my master’s & two graduate certificates. And somehow… I still said, “You know what would be fun? Medical school.” Premeds really are built different. But here’s what no one talks about in the premed journey: It’s not about loving stress. It’s not about collecting degrees. It’s not about proving you’re “smart enough.” It’s about purpose. Every premed class. Every late night studying. Every MCAT breakdown. Every application season doubt. It builds something in you. And if you’re on the medical school path right now — overwhelmed, second guessing, wondering if you’re doing “too much” to get into med school — hear me clearly: You’re not crazy. You’re committed. Getting into medical school isn’t about who never struggled. It’s about who kept going. If you’re navigating: • premed coursework • GPA repair • post-bacc or master’s programs • medical school applications • MCAT prep • choosing between MD vs DO • building a competitive med school application You’re in the right place. I share real strategies, real systems, and real guidance on how to get into medical school — without fluff. Follow @anatomywithjoyce if you’re serious about becoming a doctor and want structure, clarity, and strategy on your premed journey. Now I want to know 👇 How many degrees deep are you right now? Comment below if you’re in this with me. Serious premeds build systems early. Be one of them. #premedlife #medicalschooljourney #futuredoctor #premedstudent #medschoolapplications

🤯While my classmates were planning what undergrad classes to take and when they were going to take their MCAT, I was starting medical school at 18. Here’s what I DIDN’T do: ❌ I didn’t wait until college to start building clinical experience ❌ I didn’t follow the “traditional” pre-med timeline ❌ I didn’t rely on classroom learning to understand medicine ❌ I didn’t treat shadowing like a checkbox activity ❌ I didn’t let “you’re too young” stop me from pursuing mentorship Instead, while other students were making resolutions about studying harder, I was already building relationships with physicians who became my advocates. The result? I started medical school at 18 while my classmates were still planning undergrad prerequisites. By 24, I was Dr. Dres - not because I was the smartest student, but because I understood that medical schools want to see REAL healthcare experience, not just academic achievements. 2026 could be YOUR year to fast-track your medical career instead of following the slow, traditional path everyone else takes. Comment ‘SAVE’ to secure your seat in my free masterclass where I’ll teach you the exact strategy that can compress your timeline and get you accepted faster than you thought possible. PS: If you are a high school student interested in becoming a doctor- I would HIGHLY recommend looking into combined BA/MD or BS/MD programs to expedite your journey! #2026goals #newyear #medicalschool #premedstudent #futuredoctor earlyacceptance medschooladmissions clinicalexperience shadowing fasttrack
