Written in 1976, the Sex Pistols used the song to explode Britain’s social stagnation - mass unemployment, class frustration, and distrust in authority. Johnny Rotten’s snarling lyrics mix political slogans with deliberate confusion, mocking both the establishment and the idea of neat ideologies. BR50 years after they detonated British music, Sex Pistols are heading back on the road.
The Anarchy In The UK tour celebrates half a century since their era-defining single dropped, with December dates in Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock are back, joined on vocals by Frank Carter.
Formed in 1975 and split by 1978, the Pistols burned fast and loud, taking aim at the monarchy and the establishment with tracks like God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the UK. John Lydon went on to form Public Image Ltd and has ruled out returning after his legal battle over the Disney+ series Pistol.
Drummer Paul Cook once described their early gigs as “a commando raid” — just turning up, plugging in, and learning on the job. That chaos became a movement.
Now the rebellion rolls on, with summer shows across Halifax, Manchester, Cardiff and Scarborough before the winter arena run. Punk’s not polite. It never was.
