VERY BRIEF (20 SECOND) EXERCISE BOUTS THAT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE ENDURANCE & OVERALL FITNESS • - The latest episode of Huberman Lab podcast Guest Series with Dr. Andy Galpin @drandygalpin is out now and it’s all about endurance and fat loss. We cover long form endurance, muscular endurance, and high intensity and anaerobic output type (sprint, HIIT etc.) exercise. - It discusses the science and the tools you can use to increase endurance, even in coordination with strength training/increases, which was covered in the previous HLP Guest episode (also with @drandygalpin ) We also deep into the topic of breathing before, during and after training, fat loss, metabolism, and much more. - Here Dr. Galpin explains the data surrounding so-called exercise snacks, which are very brief bouts of maximum output exercise done anytime of day. These are known to markedly improve cardio-respiratory function during exercise of other types. MAKE SPECIFIC MUSCLES STRONGER & (IF YOU WANT) LARGER: CUSTOM PROTOCOLS TO REMEDY YOUR WEAK POINTS • A conversation (& demo) w/me & @bretcontreras1 - The data are very clear: everyone interested in health and lifespan should resistance train. Balanced strength across your body is important for injury prevention, posture, and athletic performance. - And of course for aesthetics. People’s goals vary. How to program your training accordingly? - The Huberman podcast out now is with Dr. Bret Contreras - a research-based and in-gym expert & innovator on how to increase the strength & size of specific muscle groups. - And yes, he understands the science and tools for women versus men. His clients include thousands of both. See his IG for examples. - Everyone should do an honest assessment of how often they are willing to resistance train per week (consistently). For me the answer for 34+ years has always been 3 days per week. For you, it may be different. (I like to do cardio on 3 other days.) - Bret explains that to bring up a lagging body part, you need to do more volume. That generally means more sets for that muscle. - You can distribute those sets across 1 or 2 or 3 workouts (on non consecutive days) per week but if it is 3 days you’re going to have to reduce the intensity of one of those workouts for that body part. - You’ll also need to dial back the intensity and volume for other body parts as you bring things into balance. On the podcast, we cover the specifics of all that. - And nowadays, there’s a lot of discussion about “training to failure” or not. Bret makes clear that 2 work sets per exercise can do the job, but you have to pour everything into those sets. - And he takes me through a demo “complete leg workout” to target all the lower body muscles not just quads/hamstrings. - To access the episode go to hubermanlab.com.
