CRPART ONE of turning a sweatshirt into a quilted jacket!!!
Let’s start with the strips! This is where you can be really creative. You can use a jelly roll, scraps, or make a patchwork look like I did.
Here is what I did:
*Start with at least 12 fat quarters
*Out of each fat quarter I cut one 4, 5, and 6 inch strip with about a 3 inch scrap (the 22inch length).
*divide each with into piles, including 3 inch scrap.
*Randomly pick a strip from each pile and sew together until you have used one of each width and made a new fat quarter.
*Now cut across each new fat quarter to make patchwork strips. I cut 5 2inch and 4 2 1/2 inch strips from each fat quarter.
*I then take 2 strips of the same width and sew them together to make a longer strip at least 26 inches long.
*You will need at least 55-60 strips to cover a large sweatshirt.
Now let’s cut apart the sweatshirt!
*Start by turning the sweatshirt inside out and put a pin in the front to keep track of the front.
*Cut off the cuffs, bottom and collar. This is why you will want to buy a sweatshirt at least one size bigger.
*Then cut the seams of the sides, sleeves and shoulders.
*Take the front piece and fold it in half and cut up the center of the front to have two pieces.
