Reporting in on the Bread Seed Poppy experiment. But I’m also so very sad for all the girls. In Iran and in the US. Who will stand for you? But back to the seeds. If you remember, I put one set of seed blocks, these are 1/2 inch, into the freezer about 2 weeks ago and I put the other out on my front porch potting bench. We didn’t really see any nights of freezing temps. So call me surprised to find that the potting bench seed blocks are sprouting first! I have noticed that the freezer ones dried out but the containers were different so that may have contributed. Either way I really only need a half dozen plants for myself and plan to sell or gift the remainder. And finally, I can’t stress this enough, the West aka us created the Iran of today. Now we are punishing her people for it. I’m still trying to figure out why. I don’t totally buy the nuclear weapons reasoning or the oil factor. Regardless when you treat people the way the West has historically treated people (brown people, non Christian people), there are consequences. Long term. Peace friends. Hug your kids. Stand up for children. Pray for the Iranians. #soilblocking #breadseedpoppys #everydayisearthday #zone8bgardener #nomoreillegalwars

The Free to Garden Act will make community & market gardens permissible by right in Jacksonville — with clear, common-sense standards. - Right now, there is no business-as-usual path for a community or market garden to legally operate in Jacksonville without rezoning, state-level ag exemptions, or political favors. - This legislation fixes that by creating a clear, administrative path forward. - It allows: • Community gardens (shared, not-for-profit growing) • Market gardens (small, local businesses growing & selling food) • Farmstands, on-site sales, and basic infrastructure like sheds, greenhouses, & wash/pack areas • Educational programming & limited agritourism activities - And it sets real boundaries: • Hours of operations are limited to defined daytime hours • Noise, odor, & lighting must stay within normal neighborhood standards • Composting is limited to plant material with size, setback, & maintenance standards • Livestock is not allowed outside existing code allowances (a la the “Hen Ordinance”) • Large-scale or corporate farming is not the intent - It also ensures: • Local ownership (Duval-based small businesses) • Practical sales rules (70% grown on-site = no cap; otherwise limited sales days) • Scaled limits on structures, parking, & site design to fit neighborhoods - This is not deregulation — it is right-sized regulation. - It aligns with Jacksonville’s Comp Plan, which pledges to encourage community gardens as important open-space resources that strengthen community cohesiveness & provide access to local, healthy food — and builds on the FL Veg.
