ZEAfter visiting the repair café at our library this past Saturday, I once again have a working bedside lamp.
Repair cafés help build community and resiliency while giving useful items a second life and keeping them out of landfills. Rather than dropping your item off and returning to pick it up at a later date, in a repair café, you sit with the volunteer repairing it, you explain the problem, you learn a bit about the repair process and you have a social interaction.
About 20 volunteers fixed broken items at Saturday’s repair café. Some of them fixed electronics, some clothing, some small appliances. Every time a volunteer repaired an item, we’d hear the sound of a metal handbell ringing. It rang several times during my lamp’s straightforward repair (it needed a new socket and some tightening up of the base).
If your city doesn’t have a repair café and you’d like to start one, read the book Repair Revolution: How Fixers Are Transforming Our Throwaway Culture, written by John Wackman, founder of the first repair cafe in New York, and Elizabeth Knight, a community sustainability activist and organizer. It outlines the history of the repair movement and provides the practical nuts and bolts for launching and operating successful repair cafés.

REhave you been to a repair cafe before? ⚙️
last month, my mama hosted her very first repair cafe with @themakershuborg 🛠️ She brought together the community, along with makers, fixers, and folks who are passionate about a circular economy to help folks fix their stuff! Lamps, TVs, clothes, even my ancient 15-year-old hairdryer - it was so rad to see everyone take care of their stuff to make it last as long as possible. In a world that’s constantly telling us to buy new shit, it’s pretty bad ass take care of what we already have! 🤘
California just passed the “right to repair” act! Making it easier for us to repair our devices ourselves, or take them to independent repair shops. Manufacturers are now required to provide the necessary tools, parts, software, and documentation to repair for 7 years! Love to see it!

Når vores telefon, computer eller tøj går i stykker, så er det sjældent, vi får det repareret. Vi smider det tit bare ud. Men det kan både være dyrt og dårligt for klimaet.

En almindelig dansk familie bruger omkring 12.000 kr. om året på at købe tøj. Men kun 20 kr. på at få fikset ødelagt tøj. Og færre reparerer også selv deres tøj eller elektronik.
