Even after scoring 100% marks, a general category candidate couldn't secure a job as socio-economic bonus marks redefined the finish line.
This 2021 case from Haryana involved the recruitment of Junior System Engineers. Candidate Monika Raman achieved a perfect 100% score in the written exam, yet denied the job. The state's policy granted 5–10 extra "socio-economic" marks. Because these bonus marks were added to the totals, the final cut-off rose higher than the maximum marks of the actual exam, making it mathematically impossible for a merit-only candidate to win.
Effectively, even a "perfect" candidate without those specific background credentials had a 0% chance of selection, regardless of their academic brilliance as the cut-offs for general category rises to above 100% marks.
Yes if you are a GC candidate with no socieconomic bonus points you actually need to score above 100% to get the job 🤡
The Destruction of Merit:
This is a blatant example of how quota politics destroys the basic concept of merit. It is fundamentally unfair to General Category candidates who, despite achieving absolute perfection, are sidelined by arbitrary bonus points. When populist filters outweigh academic excellence, the system doesn't just fail the candidate—it fails the standard of competency itself. By moving the goalposts after the race is run, the government effectively punishes hard work and renders a "perfect score" worthless in the face of identity-based politics.

He scored near-perfect marks in NEET, but private colleges didn’t allot him a seat because of the reserved quota system — a rule meant to help some students, not block the truly meritorious. Even the EWS quota he was eligible for applied only to government colleges, not private ones.
For five years, he fought the system. High Court said no. He went to the Supreme Court. He argued that if seats had been fairly distributed, he would have been admitted long ago.
Finally… he WON
Merit, patience, and persistence can break through even the toughest roadblocks.
