SignAloud gloves translate American Sign Language gestures into spoken English in real time. The gloves were created by Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi, who won the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. They help people who use sign language communicate with people who do not understand it. The gloves contain sensors that track hand position, finger movement, and gesture patterns. When someone makes a sign language gesture, the sensors record the exact movements. Software analyzes these movements and matches them to known ASL signs. The system then converts the recognized sign into spoken words through a speaker. This happens in real time with minimal delay between gesture and speech. Traditional communication between sign language users and non-users requires an interpreter. Interpreters are not always available, which creates barriers in daily situations. These gloves allow direct communication without needing a third person. The technology uses statistical regression similar to neural networks to improve accuracy over time. The system learns to recognize variations in how different people sign. Around 70 million people worldwide use sign language as their primary communication method. Technology like this removes communication barriers that limit participation in society. Most people see SignAloud gloves as an impressive piece of wearable technology. But look closer, and it becomes clear, this is not a gadget problem, it’s a human friction problem. Designed by innovators Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi, SignAloud translates the complex gestures of sign language into spoken words in real time. Using advanced sensors and AI-driven statistical mapping, the system interprets hand movements with near-zero delay, allowing seamless communication between sign language users and the hearing world. #Foundx #SignLanguage #A|2026 #SiliconValley

What does “gloves that translate sign language” actually involve? It’s not just a cool gadget — it’s a full sensor + signal-processing problem. These gloves are packed with motion and flex sensors that track: • finger bend • hand orientation • movement dynamics • gesture transitions Every sign becomes a stream of data. From there, machine learning models map those patterns to words and phrases — essentially turning complex, nuanced ASL gestures into spoken language in real time. The hard part isn’t the concept. It’s the engineering: • real-time latency (speech has to feel instant) • accuracy across different hands + signing styles • comfort and wearability (it has to feel like a glove, not a computer) • repeatability in the sensor signals • translating a rich visual language into audio without losing meaning The result: technology that doesn’t just automate… It removes a communication barrier for millions. This is what innovation looks like when the goal isn’t novelty — it’s access. CRED:

Sign Language to Captions Is Here Today, @gosign.ai partnered with @sign.speak We are building faster, stronger, and easier sign to caption tools for everyone. Imagine classrooms and video meetings with captioned signing. More access for Deaf communities everywhere. Next More sign languages worldwide More accessible tools This is only the beginning. Follow along and watch us build together.

This video of the SignAloud gloves (often attributed to MIT students because of the prize they won) is a masterclass in solving a "Human Friction" problem. The 99% see a "cool gadget." The 1% see the elimination of a communication barrier for 70 million people. Created by Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi (winners of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize), these gloves don't just track movement; they translate the complex, nuanced gestures of American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken English in real-time. The end of the language barrier is being coded right now. While the world is distracted by Al chatbots that write poetry, these builders used Al to give a voice to the silent. By using a network of sensors and "Statistical Regression" (similar to a neural network), the system maps hand positions to words instantly. This video of the SignAloud gloves is a perfect example of solving a real human friction problem. Most people see a cool piece of wearable tech. A few see something far bigger, the removal of a communication barrier that affects over 70 million people worldwide. Created by Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi, winners of the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, the gloves don’t just track hand movement. They use sensors and software to translate the complex gestures of American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken English in real time. It’s not just innovation for show, it’s impact. This is what technology looks like when it’s designed to connect people, proving that the end of language barriers isn’t a future idea, it’s being built right now. Via : Lemelson MIT
