MOST EVERYONE IS A SHIFT WORKER NOWADAYS: WHY THAT IS A PROBLEM & HOW TO REMEDY IT• - The episode of the Huberman Lab podcast out now with Dr. @satchin.panda is all about intermittent fasting and circadian health. One topic we discuss is that shift work is terribly detrimental to metabolic health, mental health, and over time is known to cause serious health issues. - I did a full episode on classic shiftwork and jetlag on how to remedy, or at least offset their negative health effects. You can find that at hubermanlab.com and searching for “shiftwork”. - More broadly, however, as Dr. Panda explains in this post, any of us that REGULARLY (1X a week) stay up for a few hours doing additional work or scrolling our phones in the middle of the night between ~midnight and 4 AM are disrupting our circadian system in a way that is indistinguishable from classic shift work and bad for our health. - Note: this does not mean you have to go to sleep at 10 PM! What we are discussing is the fact that if you regularly deviate from your normal sleep routine, even once a week, it becomes a health issue over time. (I confess I have done that most of my career… 25+ years). However, in recent years, I’ve tried to do it less often. - The solution is simple. Try to get to sleep at a regular time and to sleep sufficiently long (for you) 80% of the nights of your life. And on the nights when you don’t do that, hopefully it’s for either good reasons (meaning pleasurable activities) or it’s to deal with “real life” issues such as kids, emergencies, etc. - Summary: Your should have as regular sleep schedule as possible and if you can’t sleep every once in a while that’s no big deal but try not to make it a consistent theme to stay up late working/scrolling. Humans are wired to be awake in daylight and asleep in darkness. That’s your circadian rhythm. Even small amounts of light. Street lights. Phone screens. Early morning sun. That’s enough to tell your brain it’s daytime. Now your body is confused. You’re trying to sleep when your brain thinks it should be awake. And trying to work when your body is winding down.
