( BUNKERS ) Building a consistent shot
In this scenario we are playing a standard 12 yard bunker shot from nice, fluffy sand. From this range, everyone should have the goal of consistently getting the ball out of the bunker and onto the green!

STAYING CONNECTED 🔒
One of the key basics for this shot is for the arms to remain connected to the body for as long as possible. Without this, it becomes easy for the low point to shift forwards or backwards which will result in fats and thins!

DA( RELEASE 1 ) Mastering the basics
The #release1 chip and run shot is your bread and butter short game shot that must be mastered first. This is a low shot with less spin, which rolls out gently towards the target. The great thing about this shot is your technique doesn’t need to change, you simply alter the club in your hand to play different distances

SET-UP AND SWING BASICS
✅ Stand closer to the ball with a flatter lead wrist
✅ Keep 60% of your weight on the lead foot
✅ Rotate smoothly with your chest pointing to the target after impact

REMany golfers are confused about what it means to be steep or shallow…or which one is better. Do you have to choose?
I try to explain it to students as simple as possible and while some might have different definitions/interpretations this is what I have found helpful to many students and every day golfers. So wanted to share to hopefully help some others out there.
STEEP is moving the clubhead very up and down in the backstroke. Think of it like a FERRIS WHEEL (vertical)
SHALLOW is moving the clubhead flatter more around your body. Think of it more like a MERRY-GO-ROUND (horizontal)
Most golfers naturally move the club more like this, a bit too “shallow”, flat, and around. They need to be “steeper”
While most golfers need to be STEEPER—more vertical with the way the move the clubhead—you won’t see all pros be steep all the time.
There are some shots where it will be advantageous to be on the steeper side and use the leading edge to hit the ball first, but also plenty of shots and conditions where it is advantageous to be shallower and use bounce to hit the grass then the ball.
It doesn’t have to be either or. The best shortgamers can do both depending on the shot, lie and conditions.
That’s why my preference is to have students hover around neutral, which to me is what Justin Thomas exhibits here. Moves the club up the shaft plane created at address with the clubhead passing through his hands on both the backstroke and forward stroke.
This is where most pros live, and would be a good model to copy if you’re into building one stock technique that you don’t ever have to change much due to conditions!

SHLovely motion by Adam Scott for this slightly higher pitch shot. What stands out to you?
The amount of hand action stands out to me the most. Starts with wide open face and returns the face at impact closer to square. Whenever you start with the clubface that far open, there has to be some type of reconciliation with the path or your hands in the downswing. This is a very high level move. If you’re a weekend warrior, start with the face more square and then work your way with practice into having the face more and more open.

MEDan Grieve’s Release 1 method ⛳️
When around the greens, I tend to drive the hands a little too much, creating a bit too much shaft lean.
This leads me to backing up with the spine angle.
Here, the feeling I had was allowing the club to release early in transition with very little force then supporting it with my body turn.
If you want to remove the nerves around the greens, then I strongly recommend that you listen to some of these key things and test them out yourself.

ANNerves Cause This Chipping Mistake
A really common mistake around the greens happens when golfers get a little nervous over the shot.
Instead of keeping the motion smooth, the swing becomes steep and stabby as the player tries to force the strike.
When the club digs into the turf like this, the result is usually a heavy chip that barely travels.
Instead, focus on keeping the motion smooth and shallow, allowing the club to brush the grass through impact.
When the rhythm stays relaxed, the strike becomes much more consistent and distance control improves straight away.

HAChipping vs. pitching ⬇️
Chipping:
1. Ball position back
2. Weight forward
3 Little to no wrist hinge
Produces a lower shot that will roll more
Pitching:
1. Neutral set up (ball position middle, weight balanced evenly on each foot)
2. More wrist hinge, club head finishes higher
Produces higher shot with more spin and less roll
Goal: Develop both shots for every scenario around the greens ✅
