She won the world championship with this program last season and took gold at Skate America in Lake Placid with it earlier this season (where this video is from). This jump became the first officially sanctioned backflip on Olympic ice in 50 years ⛸️ The 21-year-old Malinin performed the backflip twice during the team competition: first in the short program on February 7, and then in the free skate on February 8. Ilia was born into a family of famous Russian athletes who moved to the United States in the late 1990s 🇷🇺🇺🇸 An American with Russian roots, Russian blood, and a Russian will to win! 🏆 Of course, we’re a little sad that Ilia won’t be representing Russia at the Olympics in Italy, but we’re truly happy for him and congratulate him! At the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, Alina Zagitova delivered her gold medal–winning short program to Clint Mansell’s “Black Swan Theme,” a performance that became one of the defining moments of the Games and cemented her place atop the podium. But Zagitova didn’t just win Olympic gold — she changed figure skating itself. Through a masterful strategy, she placed every jump in the second half of her free skate, where elements receive a scoring bonus. The length and jump-heavy structure of the free skate allowed her to maximize points to an unprecedented degree, exposing a flaw in the scoring system. The impact was so significant that the International Skating Union later introduced a rule limiting how many jumps could receive the second-half bonus — a change now widely known as the “Zagitova Rule.” Her short program followed a similar structure, but it was the free skate’s scale and scoring potential that truly reshaped the sport, proving that one perfectly executed Olympic performance could redefine the rules themselves. #figureskating #iceskating #winterolympics #blackswan

Madison & Evan: they stole our hearts, they have had an impeccable career. They skated their best skate, gave their gold medal performance, and the score didn’t go their way. Yes we all know the controversy, but they accepted and continued. They didn’t blame, they didn’t make a scene, they handled it like professionals. They won gold in my eyes but how they handled themselves is what makes them the real champion here. 2.) Alysa Liu: her short program combo was the highest planned combo in the event. Meaning she didn’t just rely on her calm attitude to ride her to the top of the podium. No, she came prepared. She walked and talked the talked and that’s why we’re obsessed! 3.) Quad God: yes all of our hearts broke, but if you ever competed at a high level of anything, then you know that sometimes the moment gets away from you. It sucks, It happens, it’s life, and sometimes you just miss but the sun still comes up the next day. But the REAL lesson here is, considering it already seemed written in the stars, going from losing Olympic glory quad god handled it seamlessly and young skaters should take note and see it didn’t go his way but he’s not letting that change what he is suppose to be doing. He was at every event, showed up for the media days, skated in the gala, and that is what every skater needs to really see. The amount of times I’ve coached a skater and they have a bad competition or god forbid a bad practice and then like clockwork I get paragraphs of texts from the skating parent saying how they are so disappointed, asking why they didn’t win, what does this mean, & expecting a magic fix… There is no magic fix, it’s sports. A bad skate doesn’t mean the world is over and it also doesn’t mean you get to choose when to be a good sport and have good sportsmanship. You get up, you learn, and you try again tomorrow! This Olympics show how you can have great skating and be a great athlete on and off the ice! #figureskating #teamusa #alysaliu @alysaxliu @ilia_quadg0d_malinin @madisonchock @evan_bates
