That’s the illusion.
What you’re really seeing is geometry learning to breathe.
Five things most people miss about snowflakes:
1. Six is unavoidable.
Water molecules lock into a hexagonal lattice at the atomic level — symmetry isn’t decoration, it’s destiny.
2. Most snowflakes are secretly 3D.
Columns, needles, hollow prisms, stacked plates — flat “stars” are the exception, not the rule.
3. Temperature writes the blueprint.
Around −2 °C: plates form.
Around −5 °C: needles grow.
Below −15 °C: branching dendrites explode outward.
4. Perfection is rare by physics, not chance.
Turbulence, collisions, humidity shifts — over 90% arrive broken, fused, or asymmetrical.
5. Some snow isn’t snow anymore.
When flakes freeze mid-fall, they become graupel — soft ice pellets, halfway between snow and hail.
