Humans, however, tend to suppress this natural response, causing stress to get stuck in the body. Somatic shaking helps complete the stress cycle and bring the nervous system back to regulation. Somatic tracking has become the powerhouse tool in my toolbox to care for my body, my heart, and my psyche in the midst of chronic pain, chronic illness, and the anxiety and uncertainty that comes along with this. Please watch this video all the way through to the end to see the disclaimer! My intent is not to gaslight anyone whose body is trying to physically communicate to them the need to get checked out by a doctor, or needs life-threatening intervention. Who I am speaking to are those of us that have a lot of anxiety around the different somatic sensations we can experience in a day when we can trust through experience, awareness, and time that these sensations are not actually dangerous to us. We are not being physically harmed (though of course pain is difficult to endure!) One of the most helpful lines for me is, “These sensations are not dangerous to me. I am not in danger. I am safe.” It can help shift us out of a danger response mode and when we truly can feel safe some pain can dissipate because we are telling our brain that we are safe so it doesn’t need to send more pain signals in the hopes of getting us to safety. For those of us that may have chronic pain, this practice may help decrease the physical experience of pain, but if anything, it can help support us emotionally to feel safe, even in the midst of painful physical sensations.
