Here’s a story from the request line! How did Union, Mississippi get its name considering Mississippi’s role in the confederacy? It all comes down to a church. But that’s not where the story ends, because the name itself made have saved the town from being destroyed.

The definition of "The South" is one of those classic American debates that can spark a friendly argument at any backyard barbecue. This map highlights the nuances that often escape outsiders: the distinction between the "Deep South"—the cultural heartland of the region—and the broader, shifting boundaries of "The South" and the "Sorta The South" transition zones. While the "Deep South" (the dark red states) is generally agreed upon based on historical, cultural, and culinary ties, once you move into the yellow and orange regions, consensus evaporates quickly. Does Texas belong in the same category as Georgia? Is Florida a Southern state, or is it a world entirely unto itself? And don’t even get people started on where exactly the Mason-Dixon line ends and the "Not The South" (the green states) begins. Ultimately, regional identity is as much about a feeling—the pace of life, the dialect, and the specific brand of hospitality—as it is about state lines on a map. People from different corners of the country will vehemently defend their own interpretation, making this a perennial topic for online discourse. Whether you agree with these specific borders or think they’re wildly off-base, one thing is certain: you’ll never find two Americans who define the South exactly the same way. #SouthernCharm #USGeography #CultureDebate #DeepSouth #regionalidentity

@sanssoucigallery came through with these maps😮‍💨😍 If you know me you know I spent about 70% of 2025 in Texas or North Louisiana, I mean Arkansas, sorry meant Louisiana☺️ And I do my best to live by the philosophy every day is Black History day to me and I have lived by that for years. Also, thank you to my husband @freetown_setty for introducing my new favorite song, influenced by Chuck Berry, one of my favorite artists of all time thanks to my father🥰

Jefferson wanted to buy a port. He ended up doubling the size of the United States. The Louisiana Purchase is one of the most jaw-dropping deals in American history — and it almost never happened. What started as a negotiation for the city of New Orleans turned into Napoleon offering 828,000 square miles of land for just $15 million. It was antithetical to everything Jefferson believed about the Constitution. And yet he did it anyway. History is full of moments where the right person made the right call at the right time. This is one of them. 🎧 Full episode — link in bio. The story of Black America is a migration story. Between 1915 and 1970, 6-10 million Black Americans left the South — not randomly, but relationally. Mississippi families to Chicago. Alabama to Detroit. The Carolinas and Virginia to New York, Philly, and D.C. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas to California. Where your people were from in the South often determined where you landed — and why our neighborhoods on the East Coast, Midwest, and West still mirror specific Southern cities, cultures, music, foodways, and dialects. Harlem echoes the Carolinas. Chicago carries Mississippi. L.A. remembers Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. This wasn’t coincidence. It was movement with memory. We are not detached from the South — we are its continuation. We are the seeds it planted across the nation. We are the Heirs of the Great Migration. Race theory, Nile Valley civilization, Columbus history debate, Indigenous history, American education — this clip explores how historical narratives shape identity and why some scholars call race a social construct. In this video, we explore: • The idea of race as a social construct • Contributions of Nile Valley civilizations • Why “discovery” narratives are debated • Indigenous peoples in the Americas before 1492 • How education shapes cultural understanding Many historians argue that Christopher Columbus did not “discover” America since Indigenous nations were already living there. Conversations like this challenge traditional narratives and encourage deeper historical understanding. This is about examining history critically and expanding the conversation. #africanhistory #blackhistory #civilization #nilevalley #ancientegypt #christophercolumbus #history
