Stop combining performance training with sport training! Athletes are already at team practice, with a skill coach, playing games, and doing private sessions… I guarantee you they don’t need another skills session. Performance training is NOT the place to combine everything together and call it “sport specific.” Adding a ball overcomplicates the exercise/drill. For example: when you’re trying to focus on acceleration mechanics WHILE handling a ball, you can’t give 100% to either skill. This leads to mediocrity at both. Performance training should: -Isolate specific skills (acceleration, deceleration, cutting, power) -Build strength in movement patterns -Improve coordination and body control -Develop the qualities that transfer TO sport Sports practice should: -Apply those skills with the ball/tool -Work on sport-specific techniques -Integrate everything together Train the skills in isolation. Then apply them in practice. That’s how athletes actually develop. I know these drills look “sexy” and fun online. But they’re not building better athletes; they’re just making content. Most athletes spend years building strength, but spend far less time on the qualities that allow them to actually use it under time constraints. This is where sprinting, plyometrics, reactive, and high velocity work become essential. Short accels, max velocity sprinting, and reactive plyometrics/throws/catches like pogos, bounds, and hops all help improve the body’s ability to tolerate load, maintain position, and redirect force quickly. Even heavy strength work plays a role when it’s paired with explosive intent and exercises that challenge force production in short timeframes. The goal isn’t to replace strength, but attempt to make it transfers. Great new exercise we’ve been trying in our advanced phases for our baseball pitchers this offseason. Eccentric deceleration overloading using the @1080motion. This device is a game changer, allowing me to dial in the exact concentric and eccentric forces to make sure I’m not overload the joint concentrically but really allowing me to dial up the eccentric overload. But…. This is in advanced stage exercise. I see way too many people start to focus on these drills when they don’t have enough baseline strength.
