Spring Skiing ❄️☀️ While Los Angeles is heating up with a March heat wave (temps running 20–30° above average 😳), I’m coming off a few days in the mountains where it felt very different — but still warm for skiing. Weekend temps in Mammoth were in the 50s, which is classic spring skiing weather. Even though we’re still about 10 days out from the vernal equinox! So how does the snow even stay on the ground when it’s that warm? Part 1: The Freeze-Thaw Cycle Even though afternoons warm up, overnight temperatures in the mountains often drop below freezing. That allows the snow to refreeze and firm up, creating a fresh base for the next day before the sun softens it again. Part 2: Why UV is Stronger in the Snow Spring skiing also means much stronger UV exposure. At higher elevations the atmosphere is thinner, so there’s less filtering of the sun’s rays. On top of that, snow reflects a huge amount of sunlight — bouncing UV right back at you. The result? You can burn much faster on the slopes than you might expect. Bottom line: warm spring temps may feel amazing on the mountain, but the snowpack and the sun are both doing some serious work behind the scenes. #springskiing #mammoth #springweather #weathernews #evelyntaft
