What I hope you take away from June: Congenital CMV is common. 1 in 3 women who contract CMV will pass it on to her unborn child. It is estimated that 1-1.5% of all live births are impacted by Cytomegalovirus. Congenital CMV is dangerous. 1 in 5 children born with cCMV will have lifelong disabilities. CMV is responsible for nearly 15% of stillbirths. Congenital CMV is detectable. Be tested before you get pregnant. If you are already expecting, ask your OB/GYN to test you. A routine blood test will tell you if you have had CMV, which lowers your risk. A reactivated infection accounts for less than 1% of cCMV incidents. If you have never had CMV, you are at risk for a primary infection, the most dangerous kind. Congenital CMV is preventable. Don’t share eating utensils, food, drinks, or straws with anyone. CMV is passed through bodily fluids such as saliva, tears, urine, and even semen. Don’t put a child’s pacifier or bottle in your mouth. Avoid saliva when kissing toddlers. Wash your hands after changing diapers or wiping noses. And if your spouse is ill, ask for them to be screened for CMV as well. For the shoulda coulda woulda and remind myself we are the perfect family we were meant to be 💕 Please support scientific research, improved testing, medical provider awareness and improved hygiene practices to prevent CMV But also know if you are a mama who is struggling with “it was preventable” I see you, I hear you, I love you 🤟🏻 you did your best and you are good enough 💕

🚨It’s official!🚨 This July, I’m lacing up again and heading to Prince Edward Island! 🏃‍♂️🍁 From July 21 to August 3, I’ll be running 14 marathons in 14 days around PEI, covering over 500 km to raise awareness for congenital CMV, the leading infectious cause of infant disability in Canada. CMV is common - but preventable. Yet PEI, like much of the Maritimes, STILL lacks universal newborn screening. That’s why I’m running. Inspired by my hero Terry Fox, I’m inviting you to come join me: run a leg, donate, or spread the word. Together, we CAN make a difference. It worked in Manitoba. We gained momentum in New Brunswick. And this summer, we’re bringing the movement to PEI.
